White German Shepard

Hi all im Lisa (mrs jimlad) and i am curious as to the origin of the colour of our dog
This is Duke and he is what i know as awhite german shepard we got him last year from a rescue centre and he is just great very playful and loving he is now 2 years old. Now i grow up with two of these dogs but they were the normal black and browns in colour and i'd never seen this colour till we got duke.
My questions are why are they called white german shepard when they are biscuit or sandy colour and when or how did they change colour.
he is a full pedigree shepard and is not a crossbreed.

Duke is a handsome German Shepherd. The "white" color phase is common and hereditary, not a seperate breed from the more common black saddled brown.

I dont know much about shepards but I am a dog lover, and that is what I call the smug look. Beautiful Dog!o
I am going through a rough time with my favorite dog or as I call her "My Dogter" But thats a tear jerking story for a later date, Surfice it to say I hate Cancer, It has killed so many I loved, and isnt through yet.:'(

Shes still with me for how long I dont know, but Im going to bed and she`ll sleep right next to me where she has for 14 years.8)

Yeah, nice looking dog. Sorry to hear of yours heycods. We had to put one down late last year. Mrs. QC was a disaster for months. The male we still have sleeps in our closet. You wouildn't believe all of the hair on our clothes. He likes them dangling over him from the hangars; kInda like his own little cave behind them . . .

I may be wrong but isn't the white shepherds also know as silver shepherds or is that a whole different breed?
Either way, Duke is a beautiful dog.

Lisa my Mom raised the whites for a while, hers were snow white no other colors/markings at all. Don't know where the color comes from but watch what you feed them most are allergic to corn (at least all of Mom's were) and wont tolerate the high protean dog food. These make their hair fall out! Some of the offspring from her dogs came out black and tan, maybe it is just selective breeding. Great dogs!

My shepard, Jenny, is a black and tan. Her mother was solid white and her daddy was black and tan. I've heard dogs like yours called Sable Shepards. Yours is a beautiful dog.

ehenry- "sable" refers more to the type of coat than the color. Although most sables are actually mostly black, there are also white sables.

sorry...didn't mean to upset anyone here bout my post above....I thought she was looking for dog advice and this is usually the political bashing advice thread!...djust kidding...
I'm a dog lover two..we have 2 shelties and just had to put down my 14 yr old a few months ago..I'da ratheruv shot myself than to do that to him...but suffice it to say he was a very special dog to us and that I probably stepped on my own foot above and appologise for that faupau.....
your dog is gorgeous and looks like he's got alot of smarts to him...good luck with him.....
