Re: White Sludge 4.3 OMC 1988

I've been looking around in the bilge basically taking inventory of things that may need to be done while the engine is out and noticed something that makes little sense to me as to what the specific mechanical purpose was/is.

Inside the down pipes is a swedged pin with a (melted/disfigured) rubber butterfly type valve...It looks as though at one time it was used to restrict exaust flow at idle and forced open when not at idle. Is this what that was used for? Is it critically important?

Thats the flapper inside the Y pipe.It keeps water from coming back up the exhaust if you stop fast or take a large wave from the stern. You may as well replace that while you can get to it.Some people just remove it and have no problems.

Also,if you have not found the original OMC service manual,I have one that was printed in 86.It will still have the info you need.It is in great shape except the cover is a little yellowed. The pages are in great shape.
I bought 2 of them off of ebay and will sell one if you need it.
Look at my contact info,my email should be listed.

Thanks Gary,

I may need that book 8)

I'm sitting here molling things over and adding stuff up...$1350 for a long block, I just rechecked the manifolds with a digital camera and they are cracked on the bottom $950, I can hear trash in the water pump so it's going to need one of those...Adds up to roughly $2400...

Then when that's all done I'm looking at an outdrive and gear box (although no known problems) that is 17 years old manufacturered by a company that is out of business.

I am begining to wonder if I should just stash the $2400, sell some real estate I have, and buy something with a Mercruiser in it...

Kinda wanted something a little bigger anyway and I think I am looking at a money pit. I've already installed new chairs, fuel tank, marine radio, am/fm/cass and custom fab radio rack which I can strip out I guess.

Good luck! If it was me i would consider the condition of the hull, floor, stringers ect..If all of that was in good shape and you like the boat maybe its worth it.My OMC drive keeps running like a Timex..just keep it serviced.
Parts are still out there..
You could buy another boat and start all over with more headaches. Also, did you check with Jasper engines to get a price?

The hull and stringers are in excellent shape...There was a little damage done to the bow the first time I took her out for a shakedown in which I had a total electrical system failure and had to be towed back to the ramp. Erosion preventative rocks at the Citrus County, FL county boat ramp in Crystal River did this (no power to manuver.) I took some epoxy glass filler and patched sanded it up and sprayed it white...Given the chalky gelcoat you can't tell it was ever damaged. No blisters, and fresh bottom paint.

The floor is on okay condition...I know this because I've had it up to replace the corroded aluminum fuel tank with one from Overtons. It's only 28 gallons now which I do not like. But for lakes, rivers, and intercoastal areas of Florida for scuba which is what I bought the boat for it's adequate. This may create low speed planing issues.

In any event the floor deck is not as thick as I would like for the pedistal chair at the helm so I built it up with a 3/4 inch piece around the helm to spread the stress. I've re-glassed the entire floor to keep any water from potentially rotting the deck and the new fuel tank is plastic so it will never have to come out.

I have not checked with Jasper...I have contacted ebasic power there in NC, and another vendor in Hollywood Florida and done some other checking on the net. I've basically found out that getting a base engine with water pump and intake is not going to happen. and long blocks depending on the vendor varies from $1300-$3700...

the best deal I have found for a long block is (Im not sure about this boards advertising rule quirks but I'll risk it is) $1300 for a long block from http://www.rapidomarine.com/ in Hollywood, FL

I am really bummed out about those manifolds though...Especially since I saw a siezed 4.3 88 model (complete engine with all accessories) with good OEM manifolds on ebay up in Michigan the other day...Sold for $455 I did not know mine were cracked when that auction was going on.

I got half a mind (sometimes literally 8) ) to take my cutting torch to the sides of those manifolds and re-assemble them with 6011, 301, or nirod (if cast) if I could get my hands on a pre-welded blueprint of those manifolds to know beforehand of what I would be getting into inside This is not something that one would normally find in a service manual...These would be the engineering break-down drafts of the manifold pieces prior to cast or assembly. I noticed grinder marks on the bottom of the manifolds under the paint so I am not certain if they are cast or standard carbon steel.

If they are cast not much (if anything) may be inside because welding cast is not easy. If they are welded carbon steel components there is no telling what may be found inside.

If they are cast and no sub componenents on the inside it's a simple matter to patiently sand and lite some nirod. Something tells me there is more than a single chamber inside though.

They do have water passages inside.I would think they would be hard to make.
I'm looking at the Oscoe replacements myself for next year.I think the cheapest i have found them on the net was around 900 bucks..Ouch!
I run in fresh water so they should last a very long time.
I rebuilt the top end on my engine and it has run fine ever since..
I got about 4500 in my 87 boat now so i'll keep her till it dies...lol

About your fuel tank,I have a 26 gallon and it planes out fine. 45 mph at 4400 to 4500 rpm. 2 people and gear onboard.
Got your pics...nice looking boat8)

Upon your "off-board" inquiry I pulled the plug on the bottom of the outdrive. 800 series I guess it is...Water is mixed in it and there was some filings on the magnetic catch stud.

What does this mean???
