hey guys... got a 6 horse johson workhorse think it around 1980.. i recently had the carb cleaned and it ran good although it did sputter once or twice running full.... i made the mistake of putting some older gas in it .... now it bogs down and stalls all the time especialy at high rpms... also when it stalls it is hard to pull the cord .... i tried fresh fuel this did nothing???????? ive read some posts and am going to remove and clean plugs hopefully they are dirty and thats the problem..... any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated....... sounds like you nare gitting the little guy hot or not putting enough oil in it put fresh gass &50 to1 oil check the temp after running it with a temp stick. your weight wouldnt have any thing to do with it.

I agree seems that the old gas has gummed up your motor decarb it to remove build up and run 50 to 1 although I have always ran my motors with a little more oil somewhere btween 45 to 1 and 50 to 1 see if that helps let us know

I think you may have blown your head gasket and the engine is overheating. White "smoke" could be steam.

Good luck. :)

White or gray smoke is steam. leak in water jacket into combustion chamber, or in the fuel. Look for a wet, very clean plug, or some actual surface rust on the plug to confirm.

brown is normal 2-stroke exaust.

Black is very rich 2-stroke exaust. Look for wet, black plug to confirm.

Re: white smoke engine bogs out at high rpms

I would also run a compression test on this motor. It may be very telling.
And since the symptoms surfaced after using old fuel, I would pull the carb bowl, and also drain/clean the tank,. and put a new inline filter in the fuel line. Your title, "white smoke engine bogs out at high rpms " could indicate that water, sitting atthe bottom of the fuel,is happy to just sit there, until a higher demaand causes some of it to be drawn into the engine.

Re: white smoke engine bogs out at high rpms

45 lbs is very low should be around 100 lbs
and within 10% between cylinders.
From your discription it sounded like it was running hot. Many times if the motor stalls and
is hard to crank it indicates a hot motor.
A blown head gasket could cause low compression
and may even make it hard to crank.
You may want to pull the head and look for scoring on the cylinder and see if the gasket is
blown.

Re: white smoke engine bogs out at high rpms

When you tested the compression, what did you use ?? a screw in tester or a push in???

How where you spinning the motor to test??

Is the paint on the motor discoloured around the heads???

If so, that can be an indication of overheating..

Generally though, if a motor has cooked, you can usually smell it..

I've done it a couple of times in the past, and I've always noticed the smell and stopped the motor before damaging anything...

regards

Franki
