I took by boat out today for the first time after dropping a 283 in my 1983 Chris Craft, it has through hull exhaust. Temp gauge showed 150 degrees, but I noticed water(normal) and steam or white smoke also coming from the pipes. Is this normal??? 90 degree day, humid Boat ran great all through the powerband no hickups, checked when I got home Oil is clean.

Hot exhaust in cold water causes steam. Some is normal...........

Just for a sanity check you should check the temperature of your risers under load. You could have a low water flow condition but just enough to keep the engine cool.

that could be right, I have no clue how old the impeller is. I think i will change it.

I have this same issue on my 87' 260hp merc. My mechanic told me it was steam, and that some will do that. If it is a low water flow problem what else could cause this other than the impeller?

In my case I know it's not clogged risers, and elbows as i just put them on with new gaskets. But you might want to check that?

I replaced the water pump today, and huge huge huge difference. There is twice the amopunt of water flowing out the through hull exhaust.
