White Smoke out the exhaust

I have a 96 Four Winns 200 Horizon with Volvo 5.0 fuel injected. Had it out for about an hour at high speed. It began to lose power and when I throttled down it died. It restarted after a couple of tries but was running rough. I thought it may be low/out of gas so I headed to the marina to fill up. Ended up it was not low on fuel. When I started it back up at the Marina it blew a large amount of white smoke out the exhaust and was idling rough. I let it sit for a while and started it up again and it did the same thing.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the help!

Pull the spark plugs and see if there is any water in the cylinders.
Also pull your fuel filter water seperator off and dump the contents into a clear container and see if there is any water in it, or if it's all water.

Thanks Don. Do you think it would be okay to run it long enough to get it loaded on the trailer? It is currently in a lift at the marina and it is a little hard to work on it there.

One thing you DO NOT want, is water in the fuel system of an EFI engine. And especially don't let it set very long.
That is a very expensive proposition if you have to replace injectors and and other parts damaged by rust and water.

Just looked it up, the injectors are around $265 each and water kills them in short order, and you have 8 of them.

I would never run a motor without water going through it

Where is the fuel filter/water seperator located?

Thanks.

Re: White Smoke out the exhaust

Heard bad news from the shop. Zero compression on one of the cylinders. Mechanic thinks it may be a blown piston? Possibly need new (rebuilt) motor. He is going to pull the head of later this week to confirm. If that is the case what are the issues with going from a 5.0fi to 5.7fi?

Thanks!

There won't be any problems if you buy a 5.7 "Bobtail" enigne from Volvo. That is a complete engine, completely dressed ready to start and run. It also includes the Exhaust Y pipe.
You are changing from a Ford to a Chevy. Nothing is the same.

Go back and read your first post. That's probably the reason for your problem. Running it for an hour at hugh speed is rough on an engine. They are (generally speaking) automotive engines. Would you drive your auto consistantly at "high speeds" for an hour? It's a lot to ask of machinery.

I did not run it at high speed constantly for an hour. It was alternately from about half throttle to full throttle for 45 minutes and at low throttle for about 15 minutes.

Thanks Don. If I change to the 5.7 will I have to change the outdrive? The mechanic has estimated $3k to $4k for the rebuilt engine (5.0) and installation. Does that sound reasonable?

Thanks to all for the input!

I always thought, of course what do I know, that marine engines are designed to run at WOT for about 80% of their life. Isn't that why we gear them and prop them to run WOT at a designated RPM?

Word back from the shop was a hole in #6 piston. 6-8 weeks for a rebuild.

Thanks for all the help.

A little closer to the truth would be to say....running at WOT will reduce useable life 80%.... There are many cruisers out there that still have original engines after 20+ years of service. How often do you see that in a "GoFast"?

The reason we have different gear ratios is to match the torque characteristics if the engine to the boat. We then fine tune it with propeller selection. It is a compromise between overloading "lugging" the engine and over-reving it. In your car you get 3-8 gears to chose as you demands change and you get "perfect" performance on demand. In a boat you only get one gear(typicaly) and although it may only be "perfect" occasionaly, it balances all needs into a choice that is OK.

There is nothing "special" about your marine engine that makes it suited for sustained WOT runs. Rotating assy, valvetrain etc are just plain old GM truck parts.
