White Substance in Suzuki DT25?

Hi,

I have a 2-stroke Suzuki DT25 (Model No:02503-132880).

I removed the hood and in the section near the sparkplugs I noticed a white substance leaking from one of the gaskets (Pictures attached). Is it salt concentrating there? Oxidisation? Any clues would be helpful!

What could have caused this? Was the gasket too old or did it overheat?

I would cheak for a head gasket leak.

Not familiar with Suzukis but that looks like the cyl head gasket unless I am very mistaken

I think you ought to replace that gasket before the leak causes any serious problems esp if it is the head gasket.

It could be the result of overheating so check the jointfaces are still flat and true.
Look for any paint discoloration ... that would indicate overheating.


Couldn't ID the year from the number. Around mid 1980's if 02503 is correct? Or should that be 02507 for a 1991 model.

Looks like salt/water seeping through the gasket. You could just run the motor as it is until you have a problem or replace all those head and exhaust cover gaskets, which could be quite a job since the bolts may be hard to remove due to corrosion. With that type of seepage and corrosion maybe replace thermostat, temperature switch, water pump impeller, anything else in contact with that salt water. Good Luck!

Yes, it is the head gasket section that you see in the pictures

No there is no discolouration, besides the salty deposits only the paint is flaking.

Is there anything to be careful while removing the head gasket?

The puzzling this is that two weeks before I noticed this, the head gasket section was clean.

Finding the exact year for this model has been a headache for me too. Initially I thought it was a 1988 model.
It turned out to be a 2-stroke 1991 model which appeared in the European market. Browns Point only has the 3-stroke 1991 US market version, hence a headache while looking for engine parts/numbers

How can I tell if the thermostat, temperature switch needs replacement?
Do I see this via visual inspection or do I go ahead and change it?

Maybe take a toothbrush and some vinegar and remove the deposits, take motor out for a run and see if deposits re-appear quicky. Removing those head bolts could be a challenge without breaking some of them off due to that corrosion in the threads. Be prepared to use a heat gun/propane torch on heads of bolts, tap on heads with hammer, apply anti-seize like Seafoam DeepCreep or other. The bolts may come off with no problem but be prepared to take your time to avoid broken bolts. If there's corrosion there at the head then probably in other areas also, like the thermostat. My motor is a 1999 Yamaha 2 stroke, mostly fresh water, never replaced head gaskets or exhaust cover gaskets, but after 10+ years, I'd be prepared to take it easy on the bolt removal when the time comes.
