I'll still bet ceviche with shrimp would beat the heck out of ceviche with talapia. LOL

the irony being the shellfish is probably cleaner than the tilapia but I find it interesting from a historical or customs standpoint.

I catch the tilapia we use from a freshwater lake in Mexico. I doubt if their diet there is any worse than any other variety of fish in the lake.

Not eating farm raised tilapia is a good thing. My buddy caught a huge one out here, 8# or so, though I don't remember how he liked it. What are you catching them with? The info I've read is they are mainly plant eaters, and so, are hard to catch. (I use to joke with my buddy about trolling a cob of corn for them,,, :D)

Apparently there a a whole bunch of different varieties of talapia and maybe different varieties have different eating habits. The ones in Lake Novillo seem to eat just about anything that will fit in their mouths. They're fairly easy to catch on earthworms, for instance and I've caught a number of good sized ones (two pounds or more) on crankbaits while casting or trolling for black bass. I've heard of, but not witnessed, people even catching them on plastic grubs.

I much prefer bass for ceviche simply because the meat remains firmer and has more taste than tilapia.
