Just picked one up for my jon boat. Previous owner took good care of it. Just wondering who owns one of these and what are the pros and cons of this engine? Also, this engine has a 15 hp carb on it. I have read good and bad things about putting a 15 hp carb on a 9.9 engine. Should I go ahead and get a 9.9 carb or is the 15 hp carb ok?

These motors are about bulletproof if taken care of. Run it with the 15 & see how you like it before you jump.

Going fishing sunday so that will be my first feel for the engine with the 15 hp carb. Growing up my Dad had a Boston Whaler with a 1979 Evinrude 70 and that engine was awesome!!!! Use to deep sea fish off the South Florida coast and never left us stranded. Very confident in the evinrude.

Your '86 motor has a 15hp powerhead 'detuned' to 9.9. Different carb (throat diameter and main jet), reed spacers and exhaust tube shape are different too.. so to get a 'true' 15, you'd need to change the spacers and exhaust tube.

In my experience (I put a 15 carb on a '85 9.9hp), Top end was greatly improved.. probably 14hp est., and it idled down and trolled very nicely. If that's how yours acts, leave the 15 carb on.. can't hurt anything.

Bulletproof motors indeed!

Good luck!

I have a late model 86 9.9 as well. It's a tough engine. Mine has seen a rough life before I got it as a salt water motor that got just a little bit of maintenance. It has cooling issues and a dinged up prop and it will push my 9 ft inflatable dinghy with my two older boys to 19 MPH.

I added a lanyard kill switch to mine and spliced it in with main kill switch on the end of the tiller handle.

I don't know if you have seen this site or not, but one of the users here (the machinist) created a really good site for these engines:

OMC 9.9 - 15hp
