Re: Who here has never been to the ocean?
Only problem with wave action on the great lakes is that the wave are very steep and have a short period. 5ft whitecaps every 3-4 seconds keeps most boats off the water. A couple times a year we'll have our infamous "3-day blows" out of the west where that happens for 3 days.
Every few years we'll have a major storm with 15-18 ft'rs that raise the east end water level a couple feet and drop the west end level a couple feet but I've only seen them maybe 4 times in 50+ years. Nor'easters can be treacherous, especially in November, but just about everyone has their boats out by that time. (Hunting season & brrrr....)
The biggest problem we have is that the weather can change almost instantly. I've been out in near perfectly calm water, and have an approaching storm stir up 5 ft'rs in the few minutes it takes to clear my fishing gear.
