I keep getting emails from someone who claims to have an Iboats website on Facebook. The link goes to some site on constantcontact.com. It looks like some email marketing outfit. Does anyone know who this might be and what they are trying to do?

It's not a scam. It's an actual iboats email promoting their new Facebook site. I got one today. It would appear that constantcontact is a service used to do these "email blasts" as they're called.

constantcontact is a professional spam company.... they make a business of it.... that's a point to the negative for IBOATS in my eyes..... not to bash em but maybe those in charge will apreciate feedback for making future marketing decisions

Care to elaborate on constant contact smoke? (not being confrontational just curious. I didn't find anything when I googled it other than CC's web site) Not all email marketing is spam. They are starting a new site, they have our email addresses from this site, I don't see the harm in emailing us to tell us about a new site offering.

I've seen a few commercials on tv for em.... they say they will regularly email your customer base to promote future sales.... they can do it to where it looks like the emails came from your company..... note I say spam not scam..... spam being advertising email sent to masses of people..... same thing as all that junk mail that would flood mailboxes in the 80's and 90's......

so far iboats has honored my choice of not getting any email so no probs here but if my address gets given out to a 3rd party without my consent I get grumpy fast....... but then my last email address was getting about 500 emails per hour when I switched to the new one.... made it useless and was a real pain getting everyone notified of the new one

I got one from Tanner Williams of iboats inviting me to participate. I emailed back that I wasn't interested and he returned with a thanks for my consideration. That was it. Case closed.

Kevin I'm just not seeing the bad part. CC provides a service where they create an attractive email and have the capability to send it to everyone in a mailing list their customer provides them. The "making it look like it came from you" is necessary because no one would ever open an email from constant contact :) I doubt the iboats mail server has the capability to send a couple thousand emails at once.

I don't see it much differently than a direct mail company that creates a brochure and sends it a provided mailing list for their customers.

Now if the service CC was providing was to send an ad to a big 'ol list of email addresses they themselves provided (or generated) now THAT would be spam and I'd be quite against it.

Re: Who is this Constantcontact????

well I didn't say it was an outrage. I am just not a fan of it. Like I said I'm not out to bash anyone but just adding my .02..... I have always had utmost respect for a business that quietly earns a reputation instead of agressively bugging thousands of people to get a few sales.... When I go to my mailbox I don't want to have to sort through one email each from every company I ever bought something from or exchanged an email with. If iboats were the only company out there it would be a negligable impact but the fact is that it isn't even possible to count all the sources of advertising email. The problem comes from the lack of cost involved with advertising that way.... no stamp needed.

even the name constantcontact bugs me....... I am the customer and as such I want to decide when to be in contact.

Finally, If they want to get a message to everyone on the forum then they could add it to the random adds they are already running on this forum or even post it to the message board........

That's my opinion.... I understand that you and likely many others don't share it... I'm ok with that;)

As a customer I relate to what you are saying Smoke.

A friend of mine started his own magazine 7 years ago. He says he feels bad, but "you would be amazed at how much cold calling can generate in memberships." Yup, he did the automated call thing.

He's not guilt free about it, but he said they do this because simply it works.

I've dropped companies because they "bugged me" too much. I got a Bay card a few years back....they must have called me weekly to "upgrade, get protection, sell me....ect". I cancelled the card.

Re: Who is this Constantcontact????

Hey Everyone,
Hope this helps out better than the last time ;) I used constant contact as a way of sending out a letter to thank you for your participation on here and to tell you about our awesome new Facebook page. Constant Contact does not take Spamming lightly. Let me make that clear! They penalize people/businesses for this so that they themselves don't get dinged. They do it to protect themselves and others. Anyways, you will notice that I have given my personal email to assure you that this is NOT spamming. Hopefully you don't get that impression.

There are many of you who have replied, "I don't do Facebook," and that is completely understandable. If you don't have it and would like more info, feel free to contact me. I Love Boating is great for people who are on Facebook or are interested in using it. We have great pictures, videos, stories, and much more... Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. You can email me at twilliams@iboats.com or tanneriboats@gmail.com

Hope this helps to clarify concerns. Hope to be able to get to know each of you better. Again, I am Tanner Williams, the Social Media Manager at iboats. Like my email says, contact me if you have any questions :) Happy Boating Everyone!

To Tanner:

I'm an active participant and commenter on iboats.

I joined the facebook fan club when I received your first email prompt.

********

* IF * you could compare those that have already joined against your constant contact list...so that your not re-prompting those that are already steadfast supporters...would be greatly appreciated.

Repeatedly being prompted to join when I already have is getting old reaaaaal fast....

THanks
Matthew Walsh

PS: yes, I"m also an iboats parts customer...

Re: Who is this Constantcontact????

I setup a Constant Contact account for an organization I was in. It was a very valuable tool that allowed us to communicate with a large list of people who wanted to receive our emails. As Tanner said, they take spamming very seriously. That's why they include an opt-out link in the emails they generate. Unlike some other services, it's extremely easy to get off the list, click the opt out link.

Re: Who is this Constantcontact????

Well, thanks for all the feedback you guys. I am always leary of anything that comes in on emial with a link that does not match the address when you hover the cursor over it. In this case it seems that there is certainly no foul. I appreciate all the feedback here at this wonderful forum.

Thanks
DG
