So yeh, I dragged home s/n A38005 which seems to be about a '28 model A 2HP. The mag plate and flywheel have that number, and I have not found any yet on the engine. The top of the rope pulley has a different, earlier, sn so I assume it has been replaced.
I just this morning got it running. Tested the coil, cap, and filed the points. Amazingly the cap tested OK, with just a hint of leakage (Bruno NY model 403 military ignition tester) Carb was not too bad, might have been cleaned and left dry.
I have an old book, Johnson Service Manual fifth edition, which helped me with the mag, but what I see there on the gearbox is later I think
I need to know how do you tell if it's pumping, hints for servicing the (piston) pump, and how to drain/ fill the gearbox. I ran it maybe 2-3 minutes and saw no water. I may, after lunch, disconnect some of the water tubes and see if the pump at least is doing anything. There is one tube down low on the leg.
Paid all of 75 bucks for it including the cool old wooden stand
