Coming from where? Makes a huge difference. There's only three marinas to launch from. Powell has over 1300 miles of shore line so where you put in is important. I've boated there for 30 years and actually my first trip this year will be May 12-16. Nowhere else in the world like Powell, absolutely awesome.

If it's your first time, I don't think it matters where you splash or where you go. The place is awesome.

Yes, from SoCal, the destination is Page. Launch at Wahweap or Antelope Point. Not much of a discussion from here (Redlands) . . . ;)

My point was the marinas are so far apart the lake is completely different. If you are heading to Powell from So. Cal, Wahweap is the easiest to get to. From say Denver, then it's Bullfrog. Myself in New Mexico, Halls Crossing is where I launch. The lake has more canyons to explore around the Bullfrog and Halls marinas.

I agree dockwrecker, but was just clarifying since I know where he is coming from. Also, there are some great Canyons near Dangling Rope, Anastazi, Twilight etc. These are within a day trip from Wahweap/Antelope, and there's some very cool stuff even closer.

If you splash at Wahweap from So. Cal. you'll miss all of Utah's beautiful road scenery.

I would ask myself Where do i want to be on the lake, BECAUSE IT IS ALONG WAY FROM ONE END TO THE OTHER. I have been to lake powell 3 times and still haven't made it to the halfway point. I really like the antelope marina. it has a nice big ramp right down into the channel and if the castle rock cut is closed it will save you some gas getting out to the main lake, rather than Wahweap.
I really want to get up to the Anasazi canyon this year. and I'm confident that I can make it happen with my newly acquired 1983 230 scorpion by Chris craft.
I hope you got this before you embarked.
Oh and i would defenatly be interested in captian dockwrecker has to say , he says hes been there a while.
Lake Powell is awesome.

Re: who knows about Lake Powell

I've taken 3 trips to Lake Powell.
The Days Inn has been my favorite choice, clean and new pillows when i've been there, and easy open access to shell, walmart, jack in the box, car wash. the travel lodge is an old travel lodge, and I've used it without any complaints.
Either marina at that end of the lake, I like antelope. The slot gets choppy but it can get that choppy almost anywhere on the lake.don't over load your boat and watch where you are pointing it. And if you have big boat try not to swamp the little guy..ITS SCARY.

Re: who knows about Lake Powell

If this is your first trip to lake powell you might find it to be a little harder to get waay up the lake on your trip because ITS A LONG WAY FROM ONE END TO THE OTHER,and there is too much to see and explore in between.
My first trip in Sept 1994 4 and a half people in a 21 foot rental boat shore camped 4 days and only made it to rainbow bridge and back to wahweap. AWESOME trip. I think going directly there should only take 3 to 5 hrs depending on what your piloting.
In 2008The wife and i took the 16 foot star craft out for a week, shore camped and moteled it a couple of nights, never made it past last chance bay. AWESOME!!!
in 2009 got some friends to gether for a house boat AWESOME!!
And this July the wife and I are going to take our new to us, 230 scorpion. NICE!

Powell is my favoritist place on earth! We have been so many times I can't count, but then we only live 4 hrs. from Bullfrog. The funnest way to go is with a group of great friends or family and rent a houdeboat and camp on the beach up 1 of the MANY beautiful canyons. Or if you prefer spending the night on the marina docks are great times as well since you get to meet so many awsome people from every aspect of life. Good luck boating at Powell you will love it.:D
