Who Made Force?

Hi, I'm looking to buy a good used boat (runabout 17-19 foot) this Fall and am trying to do a little homework. I see several for sale with Force outboards and inboards. Can anyone give me a litte info in them? Should I aviod due to parts? I'm not even sure about an I/O v/s outboard. I know the old saying about opinions.... but, I would love to get a little input from those with experience. Are there any to stay away from?<br /><br />Thanks!!!<br /><br />Ramblerfan in Indiana

Us marine bought Chrysler outboards in 1984 and sold the outboards as force outboards until the early 90's when Mercury bought US Marine. Mercury made some changes and kept the name Force. There are alot of people who would say do not buy force. Force outboards were entry level outboards and were inexpensive. Alot of poeple looking to go that route would also neglect the maintenance. And therefore outboards would break down. Kind of gave them a bad name in the industry.

Never buy a Force "i/o", they are known as L drives.<br />Only made for a couple years, total disaster. People are trying to give them away just to get them out of their yards.<br /><br />I would avoid any Force engine made before 1995, even if it is free.<br /><br />Force motors were discontinued in 1999.

Buy anything with a Johnson........big Johnson, small Johnson, just as long as its a Johnson, and you can go boating. Buy a Force, and learn how to be a mechanic....(posted with experience)

My neighbor has a Force 50 on his boat, had it for over 6 years and has never had any problems.<br />The boat is on a trailer in his back yard and has never been in the water, but still...no problems.

I know a man that has put as much money in a '95 40 horse in the last 5 years as he would have spent buying a good used OMC twin in the same HP range. Not sure why. Actually a family member and that doesn't count the aprox. $1000.00 I saved him when rebuilding the LU free of labor charges.
