To the original poster, I keep a spare set of working, used dist cap, rotor and spark plug wires, points, etc in my boat for emergency backup, along with cheapo meters to measure dwell and even a timing light all in a plastic box complete with a sheet of instructions, manual, tools, etc so there is no confusion. My spare time is just too rare and valuable to have to forfeit it like that, and plus I boat on lake erie which is not a lake you want to be powerless on.

After another 40 hrs or so, the dwell has stayed pretty constant. Not sure what that original problem was, but if I need another set of backup pts, I'll take a look at the Sierra, or AC Delco. Now on to the next issue... May be time to pass this oldster along to someone with more of an interest in tinkering. Mine has waned, and now I'd really just rather fish...
