I am in the process of buying a new motor for my 18' aluminum. I will be useing this rig for duckhunting, and fishing. I do some trolling also. Who do you think makes the best all around 90hp for this application?

You will get as many answers as you can stand, TR.

Now that Force is no longer manufactured they are all good, all around engines.

I favor EFI 4 strokes if your boat can handle a 415lb engine. That means Johnson/Suzuki. I would go up to 115, at the same weight. Yamaha, Honda (heavy!) and Merc also offer EFI 115 4 strokes.

A carbed 4 stroke would be next choice. Tohatsu, Yamaha, Merc, Honda.

For a 2 stroke 90 my first choice is carbed Johnson 2 stroke.

I don't yet trust DFI 2 strokes.

Good luck. :)

Once again, JB beat me to the same opinion. the Honda 115/130 is way too heavy compared to the alternatives. I like the numbers on the Suzuki 140.
I have a 90 Honda and if I did it again, I would want fuel injection. One thing is for sure, you want quiet for duck hunting and smooth, odorless non-fouling trolling qualities. Do not consider anything but a four-stroke.

JB...why do you think a Johnson 60 degree V4 90hp is the best two-stoke on the market? I am considering a used boat purchase with a 1999 version of this motor and would appreciate any feedback on this motor (pros/cons/chronic problems/tips etc...). Thanks.

This is just my opinion and I could be all wet but this is what I think! I beleive that the 90 115 14o Evenrude Johnsons are all built on the same basic block assembly, at least they were, These engines are rock solid engines and I dont think that with proper maintenance that you could hurt one if you wanted to! Very dependable easy keepers!!

Hasbeen

Howdy, 007.

The main reasons I like the Johnny are cubic inches and the smoothness of the V4 compared to inline triples. They are thirstier than the triples, though.

I also like the service network.

The Yamaha 90 is a sweet running engine, but only 70ci vs the Johnny's 105ci. Those extra 35ci make a lot of low end torque.

I don't like the Merc 90 2s because all that I have used were rough at idle and troll speeds and not easy starters.

1999 was not OMC's best year for quality control, but if it is still alive any initial problems have been fixed. There was nothing wrong with the engineering, just the assembly and testing.

Good luck. :)

The new (for 2003) Yamaha F90 would be my choice. 4-cylinder, 4-stroke, 97 ci, and only 370 lbs. :D

The Suzuki 90 would be second choice, only because of the EFI. Dealer/parts/service support is still questionable.

Re: Who makes the best all around 90hp

Thanks for all the help guys I am looking at 2 strokes, i guessI should have stated that. I am thinking about the johnson, the only problem is that they Have oil injector problems. I have been told that the diaphram system that they use has been the cause of many repairs. I wonder if you can mix youre oil without voiding any warrenties. I have a built in tank and if I mix my oil and gas, I wount be able to shake my tank to insure that the gas and oil are mixed up good before I start my engine, after it has been setting a couple of weeks. Do any of you guys have any suggestions?? Thanks for all the help Bill

TR,

The oil injection problems you have heard of on Evinrude/Johnson engines were grossly exagerated and fixed in the late eighties.

Nothing to worry about on the looper 90.

Re: Who makes the best all around 90hp

I was told that the johnson still uses a diaphram style pump. I was told that everyone else uses a diffrent system that is much more reliable. What is everyone elses theory on this. Also what is everyones thoughts on the johnson 90hp verses the other 90hp's ????? This is a whole lot of cash for me to lay down, I want to be smart, and not buy a headache?? Thanks guys Bill

TRITONRULES,

Check out the new Mercury Optimax 90 or 115 2-stroke direct fuel injection. Should probably work fine with your boat. Both dry weight: (excludes engine oil, rigging, hardware and propeller): 375 lbs
They have 3 cylinders.
CARB 3 star rating.
Probably as good as any 4-strokes in this class.

http://www.mercurymarine.com/mercury_optimax

There is also SaltWater series of these outboards that is supposed to be even more reliable and durable:

http://www.mercurymarine.com/mercury_saltwater

I use Yamaha F115 4-stroke myself.

/Bo

I would look at the new Evinrude ETEC, if new first year technology doesnt bother you. They look like gods gift for boating if reliable. Their 90 horse is a 3 cylinder at 305 pounds.

What does everyone think about the yamaha 90 2 stroke? Im scared it will be a liitle short on power since it has a smaller dissplacement than all other 90's. What do you guys think??

TRITONRULES,
Since You plan to do some trolling it may be wise to select a fuel injected outboard, 2-stroke as you prefered that. Carburated outboards may be not as good to run long time at low rpm as You would when trolling.

Good luck.

/Bo

Re: Who makes the best all around 90hp

I'm with JB on this......I'd go Johnson. I own both Merc and Johnson, and can't say I don't like the merc, it's been very good to me, but the 60 deg. V4 Jonny is a very smooth engine, and as far as the oiling system goes, the early versions were not only diaphram type pumps, they actually had many moving parts that allowed near 100:1 at idle and provided 50:1 at WOT....the problem was with THAT part, not the diaphram-Hence the name Variable RATIO oiling (VRO).
They still call it a VRO, but it's 50:1 at idle thru WOT.
This may sound like alot of trouble but if you bought a new 90 Jonny, I would have the dealer install a set of Boyesen reeds, and that new Jonny will out-troll anything else in the 2-stroke market.
I can Idle mine down to 450 RPM and is SMOOTH, with no coughing, or kick-back.....it takes 650 RPM stock.
I also believe if the engine is cared for as needed, you will never have any problem with the oil system.
Keep the oil system CLEAN, and you will have nothing but good times. I would also recommend an inline fuel filter-yes, there is a screen in the fuel pump, but it is just that...a screen. A good quality inner paper-type filter is best.
p.s....I've wanted so badly at times to say all are good ones, now, but have been afraid there was a ghost FORCE out there somewhere, and am still not convinced that Brunswick has done away with "all" of the FORCE eng.
In my opinion, I feel the Merc 125 is hidding something under black paint...somewhere in that eng. the ole FORCE remains.......Yea, I know, it's got a merc power-head...Bla-Bla-Bla.
As JB said "Now that FORCE is gone".....The last FORCE built was still 10 years behind in technology........GO JOHNSON-GO FISHING...... :D :D :D :D
