Honda makes one of the most dependible products in the market. Not much out there to go by but your friends experiences.

it depends on the hp. hondas are wonderful little motors but Mercury all the way for the big boys.<br /><br />Matt

The japan motor hold up good, but when you do have problems or need parts, order and wait. When the name brands you can go any where and find the part that day. Merc's seem to be trouble. All friends and father have issues with starting, over all reliability. Honda appears to be the best.

It depends on the HP class and engine type.<br />I agree, with Big boy conventional 2-strokes, it hard to beat the Merc EFI's. Bombs DFI's are something to watch.<br /><br />Regarding DFI's<br />Bomb or Merc: Yamaha cheats, they get crappy fuel efficiency at low RPM's because they don't stratify the charge. Instead, they shut down two cylinders. <br />If you're a Yammi fan and want a fuel efficient engine , get a 4-stroke Yammi.<br /><br />Honda...eat at Subway, your're too heavy<br /><br />

The best outboard is the one that you get from a dealer you trust, one that parts are ealily attainable, and one that has warranty facilities close to you. All outboards are good, it is maintenance that makes them last.

just bought a 6hp fourstroke nisson, it is the same as a yamaha and mercury, but several hundred dollars cheaper. I compared the 6hp merc and nisson side by side they are identical except for paint. In fact the fuel hose fitting I bought was for a yamaha and it fit both motors!

You can find an unbiased independent survey by JD Powers. 12,000 actual owners tested and reported their results. Apparently the most trouble-free and most customer satisfied outboards are Yamaha (both 2 and 4-stroke). JDP claims 4-strokes are more trouble free than 2's and the bigger outboards have fewer problems than the smaller ones. When I posted this topic I had a 1995 115hp with 400 hours on it and it was a piece. Had spent thousands of dollars in repairs with warped exhaust manifolds, bad starters, etc. I had sent several letters to Mercury Marine in Fondu Lac, Wisconsin explaining these issues and they basically told me it was my problem. I was in the market for a new motor and was looking for some advice. I have since bought a 90hp Honda 4stroke and what an awesome motor. Excellent fuel economy and have two years on the motor and not one problem. The thing just runs. I would recommend Honda's to anybody looking for a motor that runs and is not in the shop all the time.

Snoop around this board, youll find problems with all of them. From what Ive seen here Yamaha is strongly recomended. I personaly seen Hondas run. they are very smooth. Dont know much about the others. I did own a 15 hp evinrude 4 stroke, mine would out run my friends Honda but his was smoother and quieter and I didnt beat him by much. As always dealer suport is most important. Thats why I been running OMC products. Dealerships can be few and far between as far as outboards go.

For saltwater, I'd have to go with Yamaha, although I hear some good things about Mercury. Have noticed that some of the saltwater guides are starting to use Mercurys. Never used to see this.

My 2016 Marmaduke 617 Express Magnum is the best. <br /><br />100% fuel efficientcy? NASA needs to buy a fleet of them for our future space program.
