A lot of the reviews I read while looking for a system for my boat said that Pioneer had the best rated marine speaker. Of course we all know that reviews are like opinions....we all have one. But never the less I went with the Pioneers and absolutely love them.

Greetings nefferso, I'm glad you are happy with your pioneer speakers. I wonder, the reviews, what they based it on. I mean, i used to read Consumers Report. I noticed high performance cars ranked the lowest every year. Then I realized judging a high performance by gas mileage is stupid at best.

Happy Boating

Actually, you can but those speakers for $2. Well, let me clarify, not anymore. But as of 1 year ago, I could go to partsexpress, and buy those cheapo speakers at $2 each!

And my response for the rest of what you said is

At a moderate volume, that a stock speaker should be able to handle just fine, I can hear the difference between it, and my high end speakers. Quite clearly, I might add.

get some dyn -audios . speaker design has some to do with magnets used ,quality of windings used . basket design ,suround material, crossover slopes ,. designed rsononance, ,Q, ability of a speaker to take amperage / watts... . distortion from a head unit will destroy a speaker. but so will lars ulrich drum solo.

I've been away boating for a week.
As I said, GQ, you are out of your league. By your brash comments, it is obvious that you have never done true performance testing of speakers or you would know the differences. Go educate yourself then come back and talk intelligently.
Reel Poor, you are right! Each brand has a different sound characteristic that appeals to different ear tastes. A person likes what he likes when it comes to speakers. Listen to as many as you can before deciding which to buy.

Crusty, ......... Dude I hear you but your signal is not clear. Maybe because you're using a mediocre head unit. You can never get 16 bit QUALITY out of that Tape player. 2006 bro; get with the program. Wanna try again in 16 bit format? HELLO ! HELLO !

You said, "Reel Poor, you are right! Each brand has a different sound characteristic that appeals to different ear tastes. A person likes what he likes when it comes to speakers. Listen to as many as you can before deciding which to buy". CAN YOU HEAR ME?

Dude, you are confusing music preference with MUSIC QUALITY. Apples and oranges; yes they're fruits. I'll give you that much. CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?

As far as "sound characteristic"; it has nothing to do with MUSIC QUALITY. Some speakers have filter built in them. The purpose of such filter (high/mid/low) is to block undesired frequency to individual speaker. HELLO !

Again, a speaker is a dummy device. It will only put out what the head-unit is capable of. PLEASE LEAVE A MESSAGE AFTER THE BEEP.

This is my favorite quote:

"My point was/is a speaker is a dummy device. All it does is convert electrical pulses into sounds by vibrating back and forth."

We could distill the workings of any device down to that level. Heck, the space shuttle is a dummy device. All it does is carry loads into space. As they say, the devil is in the details my friend...

The materials used and the construction methods of the speaker are responsible for its ability to ACCURATELY reproduce sounds from the electrical input. They are just as important as the device generating the electrical signal to them. That's why they call it a SYSTEM.

>Again, a speaker is a dummy device. It will only put out what the head-unit is capable of.

And a lousy speaker cannot reproduce the quality of sound that an expensive head unit can provide. A someone stated previously, the system is only as good as its weakest link.

I'm going to take Speedwagon's sigline advice and vacate this thread.
I apologize to The Chad for the direction this thread has gone. Hopefully he can glean enough useful information to make a good speaker choice.

A debate is a process by which members of a Civilized Society exchange ideas/opinions. When someone make a statement, it is usually followed by facts and or personal experiences to prove credibility and receive acknowledgment. Through this format each member of the community (Iboats), may learn from one another. The overall outcome is indeed positive.

On the contrary, when someone looses his cool due to his inability to provide concrete facts to support his statement, a debate is no longer a "debate". An argument is more appropriate. Kinda like what 12 years old do at recess. At this stage name calling is normal. It shows frustration which is a sign of weakness. I can also quote a member sig. "I see dumb ..............." but I won't. Guess i will have to be the older kid on this playground. o:)

Make sure the plug is in on your next outing ! 8)
