I have a 1962 Duratech 16 foot Aluminum hull Neptune. I was wondering If some one could tell me the approximate year and the maker of the lighter 60HP or 70HP outboard motors. This is a very light V-Hull factory rated in 1962 for a 60 Horse outboard. I would like to maximize the power to weight ratio?
Thanks for any answers.
Mike
Sorry, I meant to ask about the outboards built from 1979 thru 1999. I couldn't afford to buy a new outboard. My little boat is going to be a modern day restoration with updated interior and 1980s to 1990s power.
Thanks.

OMC 3 cyl 70hp = great motor, sold for nearly 30 yrs, 260lbs or so.

I'm curious, what was the last year for these motors?
Was there ever a Ficht version?
Is the current E-tec 3-cyl 75 & 90 hp related in any way (e.g. block) with the old engines?

Re: Who makes the lightest 60 to 70 HP outboard

Thanks for the information. My ole Neptune's transom was the combination of a 5/8" piece of plywood and an old aluminum school zone sign cut to fit by a Past owner. LOL When I rebuild, I will use 23/32 ACX plywood, using the school zone sign as a template. Or should I increase the size of the plywood as there are no aluminum gussets attached to the transom? In 1962 this boat was rated for a max of a 60 Hp outboard. If, I were to increase the plywood to 1 inch, I might put a 70 or 75 HP outboard on it. More power equals more smiles, with a reasonable Coast Guard Coxain at the helm. I was that many years ago. This boat is not the ole Boston Whaler I was certified on. LOL Any thoughts on these ideas????

I don't have any knowledge of construction methods, but assuming you can build it strong enough, the USCG does have a straight forward formula for calculating maximum HP which uses transom height, width, length and tiller vs. remote steering. If you search the www, you'll find it.

This is assuming that matters to you.

Most boats I know of with power ratings above 50hp have transoms at least 1.5-inches thick. I rebuilt my boats with two sheets of 3/4-inch plywood laminated into the transom core. With the inner motor well and outer skin it is close to 2-inches.

I agree on the Johnrude 3-cylinder recommendation. They made them up into the early 2000s. I've got a 1980 Johnson 75 on my old boat and it has been a great motor - one of the best I've ever owned.
