It has been suggested that some outboards come from diferent manufacturors-even under the same brand.Does anybody know who actually makes what?I assume that one company puts out several brand names under licencing. How does the consumer actually sort it out without knowing who makes what models? It would be useful information to know

No...each company only puts out one brand name. They mix and match powerheads and lower units. Most mercury powerheads are Yamaha, many other manufacturers lower units are mercury, as well of lots of other mixing and matching in different brands...

Hi, RBF.

Subcontracting of parts and assemblies to other Outboard "makers" is very common, but it is the brand that they are sold under that is responsible for quality control, warranty and service, and often for engineering as well.

Given that, does it really matter?

Re: who makes what?

Just ask the manufacturer who builds them. Several years ago I asked the merc factory who built my mariner 4 stroke. They gave me the name and what other brands had the same power head, what parts were shared, etc. What I learned was merc, mariner and yamaha powerheads were all built in the same factory and branding was the only difference (for the 1996 50x4 mariner). It wasn't a yamaha factory that built them either.

Re: who makes what?

how long have 4 stroke Yamaha and Merc powerheads been made at the same factory-always?Are these two outboards considered to be of similar quality? These questions are hard to get answears- some guys swear by[ or at] models- and for all I know- they could have come out of the same factory.Out here on the west coast- Yamaha's dominate the ''kicker'' market

A mercury with a yamaha powerhead is going to beat the snot out of a yamaha. :D Better lower unit, better quality.
