Perhaps that was a troll, but I'll take the bait- pun intended.
It's not about considering you as a person are better than anyone else, it's about showing support, rather it be the country as a whole or the armed forces that keep your right to go out and boat when you wish, where you wish a solid freedom.
Think of our armed forces as a football team and our oceans, rivers, and lakes as their home stadium... I personally, wouldn't go to a football game wearing anything other than my teams colors. I'm buying my first boat this weekend and although I've never had the honor to serve myself, I have had relatives that did. I will be flying a flag anytime I'm out.
Maybe this puts it in perspective, flying a flag is not considered a condescending statement on those that do not.
I don't fly any flags. There's no flagpole on my boat. If one wants to fly a flag that's great but I don't see that it makes one better than anyone else.
