See the post right above yours (Etec or Optimax).

Re: who sells the most OBs?

Last year I read in a boating magazine that Mercury has been the #1 brand in worldwide sales for several years. Of course, some of their models are made by their competitors and private labeled.

I have at least a dozen marine dealers in my area and in the "old days" they were basically split between the various manufacturers. Now there is only one that is NOT a Merc dealer. That one was a Johnson dealer since 1946, but now sells Yami, with E-tec as a second option.

Worldwide sales by number of new outboards sold.

1) Yamaha

2) Tohatsu

3) Mercury

4) Was BRP but, in theory it is now Suzuki

5) BRP

6) Honda

7) Selva

I'm not a big believer that number of outboards sold means anything. It's more important to make a decision about buying an outboard based on the support offered by a dealer in your area rather than about how many outboards are sold by a company outside of your local area.

Well yeah! Look at the cost!

Honda and Yamaha are no cheaper than a Merc.

I think a big factor for Mercury sales is that after Brunswick bought the brand most of their extensive boat brands that have an outboard came pre setup for a Mercury and for years they forced their dealers to sell Mercury with the package.

That practice stopped a couple of years ago. But the boating industry was already in a spiral due to $5 a gallon gas at the Marinas in 2007!

Just my experience when I bought my rig. In 2007 the dealer could mount any outboard on the new Lunds. I went with Mercury due to their huge dealer network and great resale value.

When naming outboard manufacturers I wonder why "BRP" is almost always used instead of "Evinrude;" and yet "Mercury" is quoted far more often than "Brunswick."

As an example Campion Boats offers several outboard brands and lists "BRP" among them on their site, but I have to wonder how many potential boat owners don't make the connection and so are unaware that the time-honored brand Evinrude is offered (perhaps instead scratching their heads and thinking "what the heck is BRP?").

Habit maybe? I know that when I think of Mercury I don't visualize Brunswick at all. When I think of BRP I actually do think of Evinrude and make a conscious decision to use BRP instead. I don't know why I do that unless it's a mental throwback to when we used OMC instead of Evinrude or Johnson. Since Johnson is history now I suppose it would make more sense to use Evinrude instead of BRP:)

BRP has a great rep.BRP is a spin-off from what is now an aircraft/train manufacturer. It's mostly owned by the original family.

I know, but if you're in the boating world the Evinrude name has far more awareness, and it is probably counter productive to downplay it in favour of BRP.
