I recently upgraded to a larger boat that I am pulling with a 2008 Tacoma V6. I've got 6,500 lbs. towing capacity, but am wondering how it will do going over the mountains. The boat weighs in at about 4,800 lbs. (with trailer).

Just wondering what those of you pulling with Tacoma's have experienced in more extreme towing situations (i.e. mountain ranges)? Any issues with transmission overheating etc.? And how much weight are you pulling? Trailer has brakes, so not too worried about the stopping factor.

Re: Who tows with a Tacoma?

I had a 2005 Tacoma V-6, 4x4, manual transmission, I added the air bags to keep the truck level duting the tow

I have a 26'WA & 20cc boat, towed them both for two years.
The 26' during the summer fishing season a total round trip 15 miles each time, this boat/trailer combo (aaprox 7K) is over the trucks tow rating but the roads are flat and speed is <45mph.
No issues towing, stopping or pululing up the ramp.

The 20cc is towed during the hunting season, 200 miles round trip each time, easy tow no issues.

Towing that much weight with a Tacoma will probably bog down quite a bit going over mountains, but if you are staying under 5,000 lbs, I would think you should be fine. Not personal experiece, just my opinion.

Shouldn't be a problem but, to be sure, pull you rig to one of thoses truck scale along the road, you'll know the real weight. And, of course, forgot the overdrive (i also tow with my 2006 Tacoma v6 4x4 LB but it's irrelevant as my rig weight around 2000lbs).

I've got a 2007 Tacoma extracab and a boat/ trailer combo in the 5,000 lb range. No mountains but we've got some decent sized hills that are not a problem. It has a 6 speed manual but I usually stop at 5th when towing.

I have a 2003 Xtracab v6 4x4 (without tow package), and my boat and trailer comes in at about 3500. I feel that I am at the truck's towing limit and am thankful that my trailer has brakes. I tow it regularly over hills with no problem. I just resign myself to the fact that I'm going to do 40 and no faster over them. I take it easy and have never had any overheating issues. .

I pull my rig over the cascade mountain no problems, but total weight is less than 1000 lbs. ~500 miles round trip. :p

Last year, I didnt use my OD on my auto while towing. But I'm told it should be no problems using OD on long distance as long as you dont feel the tranny shifting back and forth constantly.

So I'm going to try that next week and see how it works out.
