Just read about new rules related to sun safety and I just got to thinking... I spend allot of time partaking in outdoor activities and the only time that I use sunscreen is when I'm at the beach. I really never use it on the boat, not on a normal basis at least.

Is sun screen part of your basic equipment when heading down to the boat or hanging out at the dock?

The admiral packs it and makes sure the admrial jr. and I wear it. She's good to me. I try and remember it if she's not with me. Sometimes I do; sometimes not so much.

Ya, I wear it...and a hat too. I make sure we all have it on, especially my kids.

I make sure I have some in the glove compartment and tackle box. My husband doesn't need sunscreen (Persian) and I don't need much (Portuguese mix) but for some reason two of our boys popped out looking like Irishmen (my side of the family from way back) and they just burn and burn and burn, poor things, so the two red headed boys get the sunscreen.

If I don't bring sunscreen AND use it on my fair-skinned offspring then I am not allowed to take my boys fishing;)

I don't personally use it very often, I think the fish can smell it on my lures if I do.:D

I generally do not bother with sun screen. But then again I always wear a tee shirt and hat when I'm on or in the water.

I'm thinking I should tie a string around my finger to remember.

My guess is that I'll just wind up with a tan line around my finger:facepalm:

Critical. I too keep a can of the spray type in the boat glove compartment (locked so no one can "appropriate" it for the beach).

Spray type plus latex exam glove = none on the hands to scare off the fish. Funny though, my luck hasn't seemed to improve since I went to doing it that way. :)

Keep a tube in the glove box for any fair skinned friends we might have aboard. I don't use it but do wear a hat. Admiral only uses it when she decides she wants to remove........oh wait....that's a whole other thread.

Myself and my Fair Skin Wife and Kids use all the time. I like the spray on Oil vs the Lotion. There really isn't much sun in AZ anyway.

I like the spray on stuff because its quick and easy. I keep spare bottle in the glove box. You'll get fried on the water down here otherwise.

We leave it in the glove box until we pack the cooler, then it gets stored in there. It's refreshing using ice cold sunscreen on a HOT day on the water. Just learned that trick last season. I'm a big fan.

I use it anytime I spend any extended time outside. Either working in the yard or working a road detail or what ever. I always carry sunblock and bug spay.

Re: Who uses sunscreen while on the boat, OOPS I forgot it again

My kids get it put on while I am hooking up the boat. My wife puts it on them and herself. Usually by the time I remember to put it on myself we are pulling out of the water heading home. I am lucky and do not seem to burn. We usually spend 6- 8 hours on the water each weekend, we put sunscreen on the kids when we stop for food. Again though that is usually while I am paying the bill or in the head. Maybe my wife is trying to burn me.

I happen to be mediterranean olive skinned and if I take it easy the first couple of days, I do not need sunblock. I prefer to get my vitamin D the natural way. However, since my scalp has grown up through my hair, I do always wear a hat.

I?ve gotten the spray in my eyes before...ouch:( I?ve also emptied a tube of the lotion in my boat bag  Keeping it in the glove box seems to be the trick.

We keep some in both the boat and in the towel bag we take on boat, swimming, to beach, etc. When camping at lake, we try to put on inside camper in cool before heading out. It seems to do better than after you've already started sweating. If long day on boat, we'll reapply also.

Re: Who uses sunscreen while on the boat, OOPS I forgot it again

I ended up with a Melanoma skin cancer at least partly as a result of ignoring the use of sunscreen through 20 years of running and sailing. I'd wear nothing but shorts, shoes, and a visor a lot of days. Luckily, it was a small one and my Dermatologist caught it early. But a good friends daughter just died because her's wasn't caught early. And tee shirts cut less than 1/2 of the bad sunlight from getting to your skin. What you do with your own life is for you to decide, but please use sunscreen and appropriate clothing and headwear on your kids.

All the time. I keep a couple of (half full) bottles stashed around the boat.
