I have pale skin (English heritage) but I hate sunscreen. It gets in my eyes (really bad when I go diving), it washes off and I always forget to reapply it etc. One way or another, it never seems to keep me from getting burned.

Lately I've been using one of these in combination with a cap:

It makes me look like a member of the Taliban or a Somali pirate but it's very comfortable and really keeps the sun off. After four days w the Arizona sun I wasn't too red at all.

I put it on once I have reached a desirable tan, but don't really need it too often. I definitely keep some onboard at all times JIC. You never know when you might need it. It's just as important as keeping a First Aid Kit on site, especially here in The South. Hell, why not keep some in your first aid kit?

After being around cancer survivors, I've started paying a lot more attention the last few years. Keep some in the boat all the time and encourage guests to bring their favorite.

We carry that spray crap and some other stuff... The wife burns bad... I am Native American and might burn once in the beginning of the year.. Anyhow the spray kind if you put it on yourself... Seems like you will end up with weird redlines from spots you missed..Get it under you chin good.. Water will reflect the sun and burn ya good there and it hurts..

We also wear hats while out on the water.. I prefer not to look like a piece of old leather when I get older..

Always have it in the boat, wife is blonde/blue eyed and so is one of the kids so they always need it.
I'll wear it early in the year but generally don't burn after that, same goes for the other 2 kids.

Where are the doctor types out there...Do we need to burn first to get the negative effects of the sun?

If I don't put any on my fourhead it will absorb all the sun in the area. If it was a solar panel I could power Texas.

When the dermatologist enters the exam room with a scalpel already in his hand, you start to appreciate a little sun block. I wear SPF 70 on my face and I don't take my t-shirt off even if we're swimming in the cove. I've never been to a dermatologist and not left some flesh behind.

My niece has to wear a heavy, zinc based paste to be out on the boat. Sometimes I'll share some of it so she doesn't feel self-conscious.

And those that related it to being a wimp in the heat...sorry...that is just ignorant. :facepalm:

This kid's skin really doesn't care what the ray's temperature is. I just don't like leaving flesh at the doctor's office.

I burn really bad, and the Florida sun is not kind to me. I should put it on everyday, but I never use it. While I don't want skin cancer, I fully expect to get it, should I live long enough. I honestly expect to be lost at sea long before the big C gets me. Morbid, but a good portion of me believes it.
