Re: WHOA!! flat head V8 boat motor

Wow!..I've never seen a flathead motor in a boat.... last one we had was a 60HP Flathead Ford in our T-bucket roadster, straight pipes out of the manifold!...not real fast, but if we got points for fun and loud, we'd have won every time! Wish I had it back now, but doubt it would pass pollution standards, or any standards for that matter!:D

Now that is cool. I wonder why flatties weren't used in some of the old wood boats like Hacker, Chris-Craft, etc. They had to be cheaper than Packards and the like.

The only motors I've seen in the old wooden boats were flat-head straight 4's and straight 6's. Seems like an old flat-head Ford, either a 60HP or 90HP might have been a good, cheap marine motor...maybe the marine conversions hadn't been worked out on them?

I had an old clyde plywood boat with a 1936 ford flathead v-8 60 in it.... It was built for the government at the end of WWII.... she was untouched in a barn for 30 years before I got her.... took me just a couple hours to get the thing running perfect shoulda kept it but I let a 'friend' cheat me out of it nearly 20 years ago :(

They were used but, they do make the torque like a straight six of the same displacement. The V8s added width over a I-6 eats up interior room.

A Packard straight eight put out 140hp. The Ford V8 was half that!

What did the Buick and Pontiac straight 8 put out? Torque had to be awesome with the huge crankshaft that was spinning when you let the clutch go. My first Bro-in-law had a '49 black Pontiac straight shift coupe with a straight 8 and to hear that sucker wind out was mind boggling. Course to hear the little Chevy 265 standard tranny with dual glass packs in the '55 and '56 models would just make you fall in love with the car....not the gal sitting next to you.....before she had to sit across from you with her seat belt on....thanks US Govt!!!!!!!!!!

I've always thought the flathead engines I've seen, looked and sounded beautifull.

Almost no GM engines in the marine industry in the 40's, The Chrysler Marine straight 8 was 160 hp

My first boat had a flathead Ford motor directly coupled to the prop shaft which made for some exciting times on a cold start.
Had to make sure the boat was pointed to the wide open water so when it kicked you were off & racing.
It was a lifetime ago but I seem to remember they identified them with the number of head bolts, 21 bolt rings a bell and I believe mine was 260 cubic inch.
Also had an inline 6 flathead Dodge, Q-Dodge? So long ago now

Barr marine, Osco, & Stokes (all three were 'marine conversion' manufacturers) used to sell the conversion kits for flat head V8's.
