The only motors I've seen in the old wooden boats were flat-head straight 4's and straight 6's. Seems like an old flat-head Ford, either a 60HP or 90HP might have been a good, cheap marine motor...maybe the marine conversions hadn't been worked out on them?![]()
Now that is cool. I wonder why flatties weren't used in some of the old wood boats like Hacker, Chris-Craft, etc. They had to be cheaper than Packards and the like.
A Packard straight eight put out 140hp. The Ford V8 was half that!
What did the Buick and Pontiac straight 8 put out? Torque had to be awesome with the huge crankshaft that was spinning when you let the clutch go. My first Bro-in-law had a '49 black Pontiac straight shift coupe with a straight 8 and to hear that sucker wind out was mind boggling. Course to hear the little Chevy 265 standard tranny with dual glass packs in the '55 and '56 models would just make you fall in love with the car....not the gal sitting next to you.....before she had to sit across from you with her seat belt on....thanks US Govt!!!!!!!!!!
