hello there, i have a 1987 50hp force, and i put it in forward no problem, but when it goes in to reverse the whole engine seems to come out of the water and it raises, am i missing a clamp or something to keep the engine in the water in reverse?? the guy who sold me the boat said nothing about such a lock pin. if it is? where does it go on the engine? all i have is this metal piece the raises the engine up and down, what do i do to keep my force in the water while reversing . thank you

Hi BIGBUX: I have a 1989 Force 50 and assume they are similar. Look at the front of your engine where the steering arm attatches to the motor. Directly below this on the clamp that holds the motor to the boat is a little lever that is marked "lock" and "release." You flip this lever one way to lock the engine in place (I usually do it before backing the boat into the water) and the other way to release it so you can raise the motor up. If you forget to lock this lever, your motor will jump out of the water in reverse - took me a few times to remember this but having the motor jump out is a little unnerving <G> Good Luck!

Howdy, BigBux.

When you shift into reverse the linkage should lock the engine to the mount, preventing it from raising.

Look for it. It may be misadjusted, broken or missing.

Good luck. :)

Ain't it cool when that happens. It used to scare the crip out of me everytime.

BIGBUX
I have a 1987--50 hp Force and mine locks down on the tilt pin which I had to make. I have to keep the pin in the next to the top hole to get my boat to plane off. there is a lever at the front of the motor that reads Lock and Unlock. When I beach my boat I have to unlock it and then forget to lock it back usally after too many brews.
