JB the skinny tanks that you have trouble with standing up with a lantern head are intended to have a removable plastic base around them. Also all the skinny tanks I have are re-fillable and I don't think the fat ones are. I just take the grill propane tank and fill up all my skinnies. I read a warning label on a fat one that said something like don't re-fill this container. Just my experience.

Re: Why 2 Sizes of Propane??

Some places out here in Californee won't fill my tank on the 1978 motorhome. It has the old style valve. They won't fill it as of 3 years ago unless you know where to go. Which I do. What I want to know is what the devil is the difference in the two valves? The one I have on there now is only 4 years old & the old one lasted 22 years? The only reason I replaced the old one was because the dealer reccommended it. I know, I harpooned myself.

The OPDs have a Float,+ Needlevalve in them to Stop the Filling process....
And,
A Shrader type of valve at the discharge point.....
You can't just crack the valve to see if there's any gas in it........

I'm going to have to go Try it....
If the Float, Floats..........
It Should give up the gas(Liquid), with the Tank Inverted........

ndemge,
Have you Actually Tried It ????

BL, ask the gas dealer who the regulatory agency is, for propane, in CA. Give them a call. It was my understanding that stationary mounted RV tanks were exempt from the new law.

Re: Why 2 Sizes of Propane??

can't fill the small bottles with the new opd valves..... all you can get is vapor into them, will work for a bit, but with no liquid, no longterm gas.
ndemge,
I finally got around to trying this......
Good News....
It Works........... ;)

The OPDs Will allow Liquid to transfer.........
I still got 10 small bottles filled from the 20lber before I switched to a Full 20lber.......

The "Float" that Stops the filling process in the 20lber, when filling it, is submerged when the 20lber is turned upside down.... This causes the "Float" to Open,+ releases the Liquid to flow........
And, My transfer fitting opens the check-valve in the OPD.......

I'm getting about the Same refill rate of 70%/90% in the Little Bottles........

Re: Why 2 Sizes of Propane??

Flip the (any tank OPD or not) over with the adapter (will fit all). Stick a phillips in the skinny or fat cyl and purge the air out, then screw in and let it rip. Don't mess with the schrader valve,...you will fill it up enough, and its just about free compared to a new cylinder anyway. You could overfill it and also the schrader valve could leak and blow your house up. And the OPD's have nothing to do with valves or tank size or Rv's or type of valve cap. Its now a triangle shape to distinguish a overfill device, which is mandatory to fill in most if not all states (if not-you will be next). I also made up a hose with two fittings to transfer gas from new OPD to a old tank...equals out 1/2 each. Can't see buying all new tanks when I don't need too. I'll blow myself up yet, but some things just need tinkering!
