Why a left hand prop?

I searched, but to no avail....

I have a 1979 Galaxy with an AQ120b and 270 outdrive with a left hand prop..

I also have a Chrysler tri-hull with a similar engine and the same outdrive, but right hand drive...

I pulled the top end of each outdrive apart, and it appears that you could reverse the cables and make either a right or left drive...

am I missing something?
Is there a reason for right and/or left rotation?

Thank you in advance,

Andy

Preference, or maybe someone had to replace a prop and found a cheap LH one.

Re: Why a left hand prop?

most engines today are right hand, simply because most are converted automotive engines. However if you have twins (which I am asumming is not the case here) one should be right hand and the other left hand. This balances the torque and the boat goes in a straight line and handles better. But in singles it's usually right hand. Why is one left? beats me. see http://newboatbuilders.com/pages/fuel-2.html. About two thirds down the page is a section on engine rotation and some links on the subject.

Thank you for the link,
I guess so the prop would rotate the same direction as the engine??????

Has anyone converted a left to a right?

I don't have a preference other than right hand props seem more prevalent and a little cheaper....

I don't think there would be any performance difference, and the 270 is so easy to change rotation on. I'd just run it 'til it needs replacement.

my old prop is chipped/broken, and the shifter is flat worn out.....

I was going to replace the shift/drive mechanism, cables, and prop all at once....

You can swap the whole drive. Prop rotation should be a non issue.
