Why are Starcraft owners such enthusiasts?

I'm sure I will get plenty of answers for my ignorance and possibly a little shame.....but I have noticed that those of the "tin can club", as some have called it, are somewhat more enthusiastic about their vessel than "other boaters". Now, seeing as how I am quite new to boating, can someone help explain this "boating phenomenom" concerning these obviously cherished prizes they call the Starcraft?

I will go hide under a rock while I am chastised for my ignorance.:p;)

Re: Why are Starcraft owners such enthusiasts?

i don't have a starcraft. but i'll speculate...

1. well designed boats
2. many of them around
3. easier than most to rebuild, especially compared to fiberglass
4. fairly light compared to some being aluminum in design
5. aluminum in design may make for slightly more durable boat in some circumstances
6. good looking boats

i reckon there are other reasons too. but that's my guess.

Ziggy hit on some good reasons. I'll add:

Starcraft is one of the few manufacturers that has made boats that fall into so many segments. They've made everything from row boats up to 30' cruisers.

The hulls are very similar. This means that the guy working on a 14' runabout and give and receive advice to/from another guy working on a 22' cruiser.

Ziggy pretty much summed it up:)

I would only add that there is a certain nostalgia in owning a boat from the 60s or 70s that is still seaworthy. The fact that aluminum is lightweight and durable helps too, as we don't spend as much on gas as heavier boats require.

Older fiberglass hulls do require a lot more elbow grease, time, and money to restore(although the "fiberglassics" look nice from the 60s as well).

Thanks for sharing your input. I already feel less ignorant.:D When it comes to older boats, I have found one on CL that I have fell in love with and hope to own one day:

35 Ft 1975 Christcraft Cruiser

I think this thing is just absolutely goreous. Could live on that thing for weeks!

Re: Why are Starcraft owners such enthusiasts?

We had a Sea Nymph "14R" (for rugged duty) fishing boat. The boys grew up in it. It was deep and very seaworthy and would take 2 adults and 2 teenagers in some real heavy waters without incident. I upgraded the trailer once and the engine twice. After 31 years of service some of the rivets started to leak (the seams were all tight) so I decided to treat myself to a new boat.

Our new Starcraft Seafarer 14 is only a few inches longer and wider, but the depth is about the same. It has a shallow deep-V as opposed to a round bottom, forward V. We got the model with split seats and a floor.

I can't say enough good about the Starcraft. It rides and handles 1000% better, its drier and more stable, and it sounds more solid when you hit a wave. This is actually the first Starcraft I've ever been in. Had a lot of experience with many other tinnies, and now I know why the Starcrafts have such a following.

I think Starcrafts must be in the blood of most North Americans that have had anything to do with boating. Since owning a Starcraft, especially the SS18, I have been approched both on the water and at the launch by people everytime I go out that say wow nice boat my grandfather or dad had one of those. I think it is pretty cool. I love the way the boats handle and how easy they are to repair.

Re: Why are Starcraft owners such enthusiasts?

I think for a lot of people it's a matter of brand recognition at first. Starcraft has been around for about 60 years now, many of us grew up around these boats and when it came time to buy our own boat it was a brand that we were used to seeing and trusted. Especially when you realize that the 1979 you bought really isn't build much different than the 1964 model you remember as a kid.

I grew up fishing on my uncles 16' Starcraft 16' runabout, when I found a deal on my first Starcraft it was almost the same boat that I remembered back then. I've been boating myself now for over 30 years and from the start I've owned at least one Starcraft boat, at times there were 6. I'm at only two right now, but I have too many others as well to actively go looking for more to add to the fleet I guess. (I'm up to 8 boats at the moment and have about 5 empty trailers in the yard). If I had more room and more time, no doubt I could easily double that number but what it boils down to is that you can only use one at a time.

Heck, the 2011 models aren't that different. How long has the Islander been in the program, essentially unchanged?

In the aluminum hulls, from what I've seen having many of them apart over the years, there have been several changes over the years in the construction of these. The first was in the early to mid 60's when they moved away from the basically flat or round bottom v hull boats to what they called the Concave V. Then they slowly morphed into more of a V hull in the early 1970s and then somewhere around 1978 or so, they hull design again chainged with the loss of the lapstrake sides on some or part of several hulls and the newer deeper V meant more space and new structure under the deck. The newer hulls never seemed as rigid to me. I just looked at a 1979 22' SS, it lacks the lapstrake sides, the splashwell is narrow with enclosed corners, and the under deck area is pumped full of foam.

For me, the main interest has always been in the 1960's and very early 70's models.
I like the cut to fit foam they used over pour in urethane and the older splashwell is a lot simpler design. Also, transom wood replacement on those hulls is much easier since they didn't seal up or cover over the corners. The later boats completely covered the transom wood on the inside, which I think has both benefits and a few downfalls. I've done far more later model boat transom jobs than I have older boats. I also see more corrosion issues on the later models, those made in the 1990's and newer. I'm sure part of this is due to the fact that there are more of those around than the older boats but I've yet to find an older boat with the transom seam or keel corroded through. I think a lot has to do with the pour in foam holding saltwater in the bilge. For me, an aluminum Starcraft must have the following, a lapstrake hull, the older open wood type transom and splashwell design, and no poured in foam. I've owned many of this era Starcraft and none have ever let me down.

Re: Why are Starcraft owners such enthusiasts?

I still have my first boat, 67' 12' Starcraft, that my father bought ($300.00 in 1971) for my birthday when I was a kid. I had a 58' 7.5 Johnson on it and I would run all day most everyday I could. The boat is very well made- -the reason it's still around for over 40 years. I've never spent a minute in fixing her up; and she deserves it for all her service.

I'm baffled by the SC owners too. I looked at some newer glass bowriders and they were pretty mediocre. Don't they also make campers and other rec equipment?

Re: Why are Starcraft owners such enthusiasts?

I remember a while back using "search" for help with a Starcraft question. I quickly found that most Starcraft owners here have older "tinny's".

Not all Starcraft boats are aluminum.

Never would have thought I'd own a deckboat, but she came with the house. It's been a great little boat.

Their glass rigs are decent but nothing to write home about. The majority of us enthusiasts do indeed have aluminum boats.

Yes they made campers, conversion vans, and stuff like that also.
