Why different gear ratios in Merc V6 motors.

You can buy replacement gearcases for Merc V6's in different gear ratios. Most Mercs in the 70s and 80s (the 850 was the exception) used 2::1 gear ratio. It appears that Merc V6 motors used both 2::1 and 1.87 gear ratios. Why is that?

Agreed----It depends on the application as well.----Such as a little fast boat or big heavy cruising type boat.

Reduces the Range of Prop Pitches needed. If the 1.87 case wasn't introduced, I suspect pitches in the 28" to 32" range would have had to be added the prop lines
