Why do cartoon characters have four fingers?

Yes, I am including the thumb . . . I don't know the answer, but my son said that he had a teacher (not clear if this was in college or high-school) who once was discussing cartoon drawing and he said "always" use four fingers. No explanation why and I am now curious.

If necessary, yes, I suppose this belongs in non-Boating tech . . .

Any Family Guy fans out there?

Drawing hands isn't easy. Maybe it's easier to draw 4 fingers than 5. Makes the hands look slimmer, saves time, money. ??

Just kidding, the explanation I heard was that a 5 fingered hand looked ackward and a 4 fingered hand didn't.

Walt sez it was originally an error he made with Micky but realized it was easier to draw the 4 fingers.
