Why do I have two coolant temp sensors?

I have a 2001 5.7L Mercruiser EFI with raw water cooling. I notice I have two temperature sensors on the thermostat housing. Service Manual 24 says they are the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor and then Water Temperature Sender. Are these sensing the same temperature? Is one for the dash and one for the ECM?

Thanks-

because the fuel injection is partially controlled by the coolant temp sensor
