Why do I lose my steering when I accelerate?

Here's my problem I just received last weekend. Put a new 21 pitch prop on my 16 ft. Caddorette skimaster with a 135hp outboard to get more top end speed. At 30 mph I have steering. When i punch it and get it passed 40 mph i have no steering! when i go to turn Right, i can turn the wheel around and around and the motor will not move? when i turn left, it will with ease. (left is the easy turn on my boat). (and right would be the stiffer turn) when it steers both ways. Quesion- why would i only be able to turn both ways at 30mph and only one way when i get it passed 40 mph.

I have never had this problem before. can someone please help me as it is unsafe on the water now.

Nothing to do with your motor or your prop. Everything to do with you steering system. Something is broken or slipping, either in the helm or the cable itself.

Whatever you do, fix it before someone gets hurt.

Thank you for your quick response.

Possible dumb question. if it was my steering cable would it be to loose and when i go faster it's not tight enough to turn?

either way I will inspect these things ASAP and i'll let you know what i find.

Thank you for your help

Without knowing what steering you have, it's impossible to speculate on what is wrong.

However, an engine that size needs to have real tight steering, or it is dangerous.

hope it helps

Part of the problem is steering the other is that your trim tab may be set wrong. The trailing edge of the trim tab should be turned toward the direction of the pull. The torque of the motor/prop is why it pulls left, counteracting that torque with the trim tab will help some.

Hey BB, Do you have cable and pully steering? If so, you have too much power for that system. You need some kind of rack and pinon or rotary system.

As was said, adjust the zinc anode to make the settring neutral at the speed you drive at most. It will not compensate at all speeds.

It is cable steering. when i had my old 19 pitch prop on i never had this problem. as soon as i had my new 21 pitch on i noticed it at higher speeds. when i am inspecting my boat next weekend what should i look for in order to find the problem??

thank you for all your responses.
