why do repair shop rip you off

I got a 115 evinrude that was hard to start i got fed up took it to a repair shop first thing they did was a compression 1t was 113 on all cylinders so now im told i need a new motor cuz it should be 125 or better i now better than that.and then tells me he can get me a good one for 1800 now way.so i go to the lake to work on it this old man ask whats wrong i tell him. he looks at it and tells me the motor to low in the water to much back pressure ok i raise the motor 4in i have a jack plate not to hard put it back in the water starts wright up now i got better take off and more speed and i didnt spend 1800 why would a repair shop even do that

dunno.
was it an autherized BRP service center?
how many training certifictes are on the wall?
maybe its the same reason customers either outright lie or obufuscate the truth and make me spend an hour of their money finding out the mistake a beer buddy made.
if you raised the engine 4" either the engine shaft length is wrong for the transom or your going to have an overheat about 30 seconds after planing now.

you know and i know 113 com is good and yes it was a brp shop but no i did not look on the wall.i work in a auto shop and a lot of costmers lie.so i know how had it is.but running the motor for about 3 to 4hours and it never over heated.the shaft may be to long but setting the motor up 4in did not cost 1800 that was free

then the tech should have noticed the shaft length on the motor was 5" longer than what the transom was made for.

beats me.
if al 4 are at 113 Ill buy it and continue looking for the complaint.
not all shops have experienced well trained techs.
kinda like the last 3 MMI grads.
none belived me when I told them about the time you have the training,experience and understanding of what your doing,, you dont want to do it anymore.

i have no complaint now just that i got to mow grass to day.i like my motor dont want to sale but anyone in the in the repair field needs training all the time

I go at least twice a year normally 3 and have since 2000.
plus we have to read an intitial all tech bullitens as well as attend the tech seminars.
next year its the volvo ETC and cataylst courses.

i go to I.car and ase once a month an i think everyone should if not they should'nt even have the job they got if you don't care about your job no more then that you dont need it.but i would like to find a maraine shop i can trust in the knoxvill TN area cuz i dont know everything if anyone knows of one plz let me know

it's not hard. get a manuel and read it. you already probably have many of the needed tools and experience in mechanics.

im 15 and started repairing my grandfather's old boat motors at 13 of course it's not as complex as newer motors but heck i was 13

i know a lot more than most people who own boats.

at the ripe old age of 8 I had my first chiltons manual and could and did replace connecting rods,rebuild carbs and do tune ups on lawnmowers and mini bikes.
got my first testers flyem gas powered airplane for christmas when I was 9.
got my first prop cuts on my fingers about 30 minutes later.
started working at a used car dealership at age 15 doing mechanical work and did a vocational automotive hop program in the 10th,11th and 12th grades in high school.
been doing this most my life and I am almost 49 now.
however you must stay on top of training or you become another monkey with a big tool box doing it wrong for 20 years.
its also why I quit doing fiberglass work,trailer work and rigging.
cant do it all anymore.

I have a 19 y/o, working for me, who is already as good as i am.

i really want to learn about outboards. take some classes or something. not for a job or anything just because i want to learn about them.

and do my own repair work =)
