Why do some folks take the air silencer off? Is it flow?

If OMC puts 'em on, why do some people take 'em off. If air flow is the goal, why not put some old fashioned velocity stacks on the carbs? I'm sure I'm not the 1st 70's era Kawasaki 750cc triple 2 stroke ex-owner to look at the option of V stacks? Thoughts??

Older 2 stroke OB's just have them to cut down throttle/intake noise..not an "airbox" like scooters...

EDIT...I'm talking older small OB, not anthing fancy halfway new..

More noise to say look at me, trying to make up for other short comongs. Thru hull exhaust on inbords means the same thing.

i think somepeople get them running and just don't put them back on. i don't know how many i see that don't have the bottom bolts in them, kinda hard to get to.

If they ever injested some water they will wish they had put them back on.

Great feedback. Even my little '73 18 has a caged foam assembly to deaden the racket. As for me, they'll stay on my 60. I don't want a headache from the noise on a long ride, which I plan to make quite a few of. It's at least 30 min from the launch to the cape, and another 30 to 45 to the wrecks. An hour of that thing roaring about 8' from my ears just isn't appealing. And the idea of carbs sucking up some of the salty stuff is just more than I can take. KR:)

If you take the airbox cover off a V4, V6 or V8 OMC / BRP looper and run it under a load without rejetting, you'll be replacing pistons.

We have run loopers with velocity stacks, lots of folks do. Otherwise Bob's Machine wouldn't continue to build them. The not-so-odd thing is that we've found they run better with the covers on. Even on my stock V4 looper I ran the airbox cover at 8200.

Actually some of the older OMC V$ & V6 crossflows did pick up 100 rpm or so with the cover off. And wouldn't get much over 6400 with it on anyway.

I'll stick with mine. You guys lost when you start talking loopers and cross flow. (outta my league) Mine's an '89 I3. 100 rpm isn't going to make or break a fishin trip. As long as I can peg it where it supposed to be, I'm happy.

Don't these 2 cycles normally spit out some fuel mixture from the carbs anyway under normal operation, that can make a mess, and a fire hazard, so why bother unless you can deal with the noise, or having your engine exposed to the elements, besides you'd have to give it a constant flow of incoming air to counteract this.
