ok, so ... why are i/o's purely water cooled? Why don't they have a closed cooling system with a rad (with a fan of course) or some other means of keeping the system closed.....

and if needed - a secondary cooling system to cool other elements (drive, and what not) I'm not an engine guy obviously... but if blocks crack from having water in them, and not properly winterized or stored.... why isn't this system improved upon (granted, added weight, and space needed for components in the doghouse)

There's be no need for impellers and so on... no?

There are both open and closed cooling systems, just depends if you want that option or not.

so ultimately it boils down to cost... the open systems are cheaper... closed, have better advantages, especially for people who have their boats in during a time when the weather may go below zero.... but their blocks should be safer...

got it. :)

I'd rather have the simple raw-water cooling system and keep my weight and costs down.

Should size/power/costs reach a point where it doesn't matter, than maybe I'd opt for a closed system, as some boats have.

Closed systems in a boat do not use a radiator -- they use a water to water heat exchanger. Water from the engine passes through a heat exchanger that uses water from whatever body of water you happen to be boating on to transfer the heat. So there is still the need to winterize the raw water side of the heat exchanger, and to make sure the antifreeze in the engine side of the system is up to snuff. Just like in the car they never check either!

an engine is a machine and all machines need maintenance..... an engine will also be destroyed if it is allowed to run out of oil or if the oil is never changed but they don't automatically add or change their own oil....
