Re: Why do you love boating?

my excuse is....
my grandad had a cabin in mn. when i was young. i was subjected to it every summer from the time i was 1 year old. at the cabin were boats. when i was about 8, my dad got grandads cabin. every summer we'd be subjected to going there. at the cabin were boats... ;) as i grew up, the boats kept getting better. we learned about doing watersports. we did watersports everyday. while dad was getting better boats. we got new neighbors too. the family had 4 girls.... 2 right around my age... ;) nice girls too. and very athletic too. the competition was on in watersports, that's for sure... when i turned working age. my first job i got was on the lake. i lived the summer with the folks of the 4 girls when i was 16 and 17. i worked at the local resort and commuted to work in a boat. wow, how cool was that.
well, boating stuck with me. i like engines. i like boats, i like speed, i like the tranquility of boating. i like the fact that your very indepentet when boating. free of the worlds troubles....

just getting out and away from the world. Unless someone is going to hop in the water and swim out to my boat, I have full control over whats going on.

drop anchor in one of my honey holes, lean back and wait for the bobber to go under is my idea of a good day.

What other past time allows you to run over people on jet skis and have no one care?

Re: Why do you love boating?

When I was 5 someone gave my dad an old wooden speed boat with a Scott-Attwater 33 hp out board. I sat in the garage for hours while he sanded it down and varnished it. Now my 5 and 8 year olds help me wax and work on my boat.

Its the best family time you can have. When I am on my boat all my stress disappears. Lake of the Ozarks 2008 vaca.

It's one of the last places on Earth I can hear my own thoughts. Something about the water slapping against the boat, it is the most pleasant sound I can imagine.

It is probably the most relaxing thing there is, work can't find you and sitting in the quiet on the water is so peaceful. A little slap from the water a light breeze, can just sit there and soak in the peace. Now with the grandkids we can enjoy them as well on the water, kinda breaks the piece and quiet thnig but still very enjoyable, teaching them to fish, tube, and a number or other things.

wow...it's kinda crazy really...I was raised a navy brat...moved all over the eastern seaboard every 2 yrs whether we needed too or not...always near or on or around boats....worked in the marine industry for quite a number of yrs..but finally got a chance to work in another field that I've always dreamed of and went nuts...was without a boat or water...so..we bought a boat and have been boating ever since...

Nobody waves at me when I'm in my car. I don't see any bikinis when I'm driving around in my car. Stop signs, traffic lights, cops, and doof-balls hender any enjoyment driving a car could be. But on the water everyone is just cool.

Two pictures.

And this

I love to fish, mostly for bass, but crappie and stripers a bit too. Would really love to coastal fish 100% of the time, but that isn't possible.

Secondly, I love working on boats and older 2 stroke outboards. The one pictured is my '36, but I have a '48, '49, '55, and a '39 should be on its way. I don't care too much for glass boats, but any sort of aluminum boat work really sparks my interest. I am interested in building a 20 foot CC from scratch, and restoring a late 40s aluminum runabout, with the second row helm.

A lot of the replies tells me I was correct when I said you could sum it up in one word, FREEDOM. You can go as fast or slow as you want, go where you want, think to yourself, no stop signs, street lights, police monitoring, goof balls, the list goes on and on. We boaters are a unique group of people, all shapes, sizes, colors, and creeds, and the best part is no one cares because we are truly free out there. God Bless America, for here we can truly do what we want.

You can do it all on a boat. Peace and tranquility, family time, water sports, fishing, relaxation and you can find your "own spot" if you want to.

Re: Why do you love boating?

Boating is just a more effective means to go fishing for me. I'm not into skiing, tubing or other watersports related stuff.

I do greatly enjoy the calm and tranquility on the water, but also have that at home.

As for boating representing freedom with no rules, etc. Uhhh... there ARE "rules of the road" in every state and in national waters as well.

Freedom? I can get in my car and go anywhere, which is freedom. I can get on a plane and go anywhere, another form of freedom. Don't have a helicopter, but that would certainly give free access to many spots, including water.

Freedom isn't about things, it's about blood that's been shed to allow choices to be made.

ATTENTION ALL POSTERS - Please refrain from using the word "freedom" when describing what YOU love about boating.
You will never hear the end of it.:D

I don't think these answers were intended to be graded.
They're personal. One answer is no better than the next,
regardless of what your mind may be telling you.

Yeah, but how do you know that you've found your "own spot" and that it's not someone elses?:):):)
I'm kidding. Haven't heard from you in a while- Fortunately, my Johnson has been running good as of late. take care

Hmmm... didn't realize I'd step on toes.

So let me rephrase.

To ME... Freedom isn't about things, it's about blood that's been shed to allow choices to be made.

There, I hope that's better. LOL

And my boat represents those freedoms, smart one.

Re: Why do you love boating?

Boating doesn't really give me more freedom. Just is the most practical way to get to where the big ones swim. In fact, peaceful and calm is rarely the name of the game on most of the local reservoirs, (because my home lake is the 3rd most used out of 450 Corps of Engineers lakes in the nation), as we are constantly dodging wakeboarders, and fighting 3 foot chop due to all the boat wakes. And, I dare anyone come with me to a tourney blast off, and call it peacefull. :D But, when you realize one like in the picture is on the end of the line, and actually get it in the boat that is what it is all about.

And, I love working on 2 stroke engines, and working with aluminum, so what better thing to work on than outboards, and what better item to build than tin boats?

Re: Why do you love boating?

I was introduced to boating when we moved to the Finger Lakes region of New York about ten years ago. Within the first two years of being moved in we had our first family boat. My parents weren't too interested in the boat idea in part by the many trips where we ended up pulling the boat a mile or so back to the dock  ;) :D

Now six years and two boats later I'm still loving it as much as before and am currently fighting the clock to get my boat put back together before the nice weather arrives.

After a long day on the farm nothing hits the spot like an evening on the lake with friends and family.

Re: Why do you love boating?

Growing up my dad got us our first boat, a '17 Whaler. Ever since then I've been hooked. I was lucky enough to spend most of my life close to the water with a neighborhood ramp. I found myself pulling a trailer by hand with two flat tires to the ramp a block or so away just to get back out there after a long winter. Sure the neighbors got a kick out of it. I love to surf, camp, fish, and just relax cursing the backwaters of the ICW. That wake behind me and the fading sunset in the distance puts everything into perspective for me. I can't get enough of boating and hope I can enjoy it the rest of my days.
