dude, I'm in the same boat you are (no punt intended). Switchboxes are expensive so do the little things first. I have a '71 650 and it was doing the same thing. I have a fuel pump repair kit on order which is about $11.50. If you wanted to clean the carbs, thats about $14.50. I also replaced my bulb and fuel lines which was about $15 bucks. All that together made her run awesome and cost a lot less than the price of a switchbox. If it is the switchbox in the end, then you'll have a new switchbox and a better running engine :) I'm new at this too, but this seems to be the logical route. Good luck.

by the way, I got all my stuff from www.oldmercs.com

If this were my engine with those problems, I would:

1. Make sure I have a Fuel/water separator with a clean filter (even new fuel can be bad)
2. Rebuild the fuel pump with a new diaphragm
3. Fully charge the battery.
4. Tap the carbs with a screwdriver to make sure floats aren't stuck closed or open. Or preferably take the carbs off and rebuild.
5. Take out the spark plugs and inspect, replace if fouled.
6. If these all fail, then I would look at the ignition system. Switch boxes are $100+. You can do all of the above for under $50.

Turned out to be the stator or the power pack. I gave up and the shop put both those on and now it works great.
