Re: Why does my outboard start and runs for 1 minute then dies/shuts off?

I am experiencing the same symptoms on a 1987 50hp that I picked up and have yet to get back to it because of all the cold weather but I'm thinking it may be the VRO oil pump circuit. So I'll follow along to see if you come up with a solution or if I can get back to mine 1st I'll post what I find.

One last suggestion..... I assume that the floats are installed right side up but it's worth mentioning. Obviously fuel is getting to the carburetors BUT the fuel appears NOT being transferred from the carburetors to the intake manifold.

Having been retired since 1991, I'm not familiar with the 1995 130hp carburetor design, BUT...... if they are still the dual barrel carburetors (two carburetors), there would be two (2) high speed jets located in each carburetor in the bottom center portion of the float chambers, way in back of the drain screws/bolts. In all probability, those high speed jets are clogged and I suggest you clean them with a piece of single strand steel wire. Note that fuel must flow thru those H/S jets before the fuel can gain access to any other fuel passageway.

If the carburetors are instead the single carb, single throat type carburetors, there would be one high speed jet in each carburetor at that same location.

Let us know what you find.

Joe...hey....you doing OK?

He has the single cylinder plastic carbs, same as used on the V6 loopers of the same family. He has a separate throttle body that contains the very fine metering holes located just behind the throttle butterflies.

Same stuff as what I have worked on for years.

Floats cannot be put in upside down.

Did the OP clean the throttle bodies? Probably not. Did he clean the small brass tube that sticks down into the bowls to pick up idle fuel?
Probably not.

The reason I say this.....no one ever does....they give the plastic body a quick spray with carb cleaner and call 'em good to go.

It sounds like the engine is running out of gas....figure out why.

When it starts and runs you push in the key as a test.-------Does it run better or does it bog / slow down ??------Answering questions will help with the diagnosis !!!

I feel we aren't getting the true skinny regarding what is going on....my frustration probably showed in my last post.

i replaced all the floats, needles, valve and seals and found two floats were kind of stuck. i did not clean throttle bodies. It stays running if i push key in and hold it (or if i give it gas). I will check the jets.

Gonna be waiting a long time for the OP to respond. More than 6 years since he was here, a year after starting this thread
