Why does water come out of this place?

On my johnson 70 VRO 1986-ish, when i start it, immediately there is water coming out of the 2 holes that are facing outward, its like a foot below where the cowling goes on top of the motor. but the tell tale is only dripping at idle, and a very weak stream when i snap the throttle. the two holes however, are GUSHING a lot of water especially when i snap the throttle they pour lots of water out. after a minute or two, the water is warm. when i see other outboards, they have a tiny wisp of smoke coming from those two holes but no water... this seems like it shouldnt be coming out of the two holes and instead out of the top. i am going to be doing my water pump before i put this thing in the water, b ut want to make sure it has nothing to do with the thermostat. it looks like someone had taken the stat housing off at some point and put permatex on the gasket so it has beeen messed with by someone before.

pics would help but sounds like exhaust ports, water will come out when the t stat opens

So, you are talking about the two large holes at the front near the lower mount, right? Water is SUPPOSED to come out there. Those are drain holes for the water that has escaped the water pump housing where the drive shaft passes though. However, from your tale, it sounds like it may be excessive. I'd suspect a damaged pump housing or a seal blown out or a damaged impeller. Time to pull it apart for inspection. You said you are going to do that anyway.

Ok well I think I figured out one problem. There is no thermostat in this motor. I did take the tell tail tube off and right off the side of the motor I still have slight dripping unless I snap the throttle. I'm gonna save up for a thermostat and try that first, because the amount of water coming out of the two holes is a lot leads me to believe the water pump is still working somewhat. Thanks for the info guys.

Good luck, but I don't think you read what I told you. EXCESS water leaking out of a water pump indicates a badly leaking pump, not an indicator of one working properly.

The thermostat has nothing to do with it. But you should install one anyway.

the tell tale bypasses the tstat, without the tstat, there wouldn't be enough back pressure, to make the tell tale work, unless you rev it
