Since I've obviously been slamed here I have to ask a stupid question- Just how many different OCTANE fuels are available at your pumps? Here I can buy 87, 89, and 93. If I go to the airport I can buy (from the pump) 100LL. At the track I can buy (from a pump) Rocket Brand 114. So theres 5, although I am sure everyone is reffering to common gas stations, so that brings it back to 3 different OCTANES. Notice it doesn't say BLEND? All the different blends across the country is what the thread is about.

Thanks for defining this topic in the precise manner in which it was meant to be, obviously some folks are confused by the word "Blend" and their interpretation of the word "Octane", as it pertains to gasoline.

from what I heard all oil companies use the same pipeline. they put X amount of gallons in one end and remove x amount of gallons at the tail end. Its not the same gallons they put in, but its the same amount they put in. all the additives are added at the mixing station right before its loaded in to tankers and shipped to the gas station. I really dont see how having "one blend" would be any cheaper.

Well, I, for one, think there should be just one standard vehicle of each type. One car. One truck. One van. It would save tons of money. You could paint them all the same color, too. Brown, perhaps. That way, everything would be equal, right? Everyone would get the same gas mileage, and nobody could flaunt their wealth.

Same with boats. My 6hp Johnson is plenty big. I think that should be the standard outboard motor for all boats. It's economical on fuel, lightweight, and nobody needs to go any faster than I do, anyhow.

Yup...standardization...that's the ticket...

There are about 45 regional blends of gasoline

I would think it work out much better if there was one federal standard as i cant see there being that much differance in the blends

You can't use that in your argument as you are not supposed to run 100LL in cars, that is an aviation fuel for airplanes ONLY. I worked at an airport for 5 years and sold this fuel to racers. I only did it because my boss wouldn't pass up a dollar income. It was illegal to do. Not only is it not good for your car, but you wouldn't pass an emissions test using it.

Next time you go to your local gas station to fill up, ask them how many different grades they buy - the answer will be two. If you purchase anything in between regular and high test - it's being blended. Hate to disappoint you.
(Remeber the dial at Sunoco way back when?)

When it's plus 30C in July you need a different blend of gasoline than in January when it's minus 30C. Fact of life in a part of the world with climate. Having lived several places in the world I'll take a snowstorm over a hurricane anyday....wish you near lke good luck.

The difference is, it creates a bottle neck in the supply side, this aids the oil refineries to maintain price levels in times when crude oil is in over supply, though it is not the only factor in the high gas prices we now experience.
Times have changed, crude oil is in strong demand and will remain so for the next twenty five years or so, at least until the next alternative fuel source becomes standard.
I could be wrong here, but i would bet the farm that i'm right.

You're not wrong. China is the 800 pound Gorilla in the room that everyone chooses to ignore. Their appetite for natural resources will make ours look paltry.

They will soon surpass us as the economic super power of the world. Notice I said "economic", not military.

I had heard recently on the news, that China has had rather high inflation and that their '08 economic growth rate has been the lowest in several years.

Japan is in the dumper and Europe has inflation problems, also.

Maybe we're all in this together.

Yeah, but by lowest in years, they mean 15% growth... that's so far above us, we haven't seen that kind of economic growth in many decades.
