Re: Why don't you post your personal profile.

. Why send them down a path that was expensive and unnecessary? You do care about quality don't you? This is a great forum to learn but it could be improved in some areas.

You mean like the post a few weeks back where the op inquired something like "my boat has a wierd water line" and 3 posts later somebody had him drilling holes in the sole and ripping out his deck. You mean expensive like that? No that doesn't happen.

I will add that like JB I judge people based on other things other than them saying "I'm a professional." For instance, I have a electrical backrground so I tend to spend lots of time in that forum helping when I can. However I know NOTHING about paint or glass work. So when I ask a question there i tend to put more trust in people that seem like old salts.

Like I said I know nothing about glass work so I'll give a electrical example. For instance these guys in the electrical forum would be the guys when a OP asks about a light being out will be the first ones to ask very specific questions. Is it just one light or does it appear to be several? have you checked the fuse, or wiggled the lamp. These are the guys that will gather very specific fact about the OP's problem, then suddenly the clouds part, champaign falls from the sky and they say something that's so awe inspiring to the newb that only a pro would suggest it...... "have you grabbed the wires behind the dash and tried to shake them?" With this one final awe inspiring question the newb knows his prayers have been answered, and after a 30 second crimp connector, he'll be back on the water tonight. My point here is years of experience have taught us that this problem is common, and more importantly how to quickly anc confidently trouble shoot it. We know that this is proof positive of the issue, and there really no need to tell the OP to go buy a meter(although it's very necessary sometimes) and trace through hundreds of feet of wire.

It's these little "dumb" tricks that when someone suggests it I go" uh ha! this guys been here before and knows a trick"

Re: Why don't you post your personal profile.

Old timers here know from experience who gives the most helpful and reliable advice.

It is not that simple for new members, but there is evidence.

If you look at a poster's post count and how long (s)he has been a member you can get a bit of an idea. Guys who give bad or unhelpful advice usually don't hang around very long.

I personally find that method more reliable than looking for a resume in the profile. I also find that the most helpful members are often too modest to toot their own horns.

Dontask..How much more are you going to try and make your point when you have your answer right here??

What's sad is you haven't even acknowledged any post that has made any sense at all. You keep on hammering away at this qualification thing and don't see past it...

The only time I check someone's profile is when they behave like a real A-hole.

I don't think profiles have anything to do with how much marine experience you have. Sure you can put it there, but saying it's what profiles are for is just puzzling.

And where the heck do you live dontask?

Re: Why don't you post your personal profile.

Well... I like it when profiles are filled out. With motor or boat price questions and especially fishing questions, when a post doesn't even have a location, I don't even know how to respond most of the time. Plus, if someone really is 14, my responses might be entirely different than that to a 40 year old. Like with some of the subjects covered in Dockside Chat for example.

What is there to hide? If you are afraid to reveal where you are from, is that because you have no credibility? just a thought....

Why do you need to know about others profile? Do you belong to some organization collecting data to sell? If you are not joking about your profile and LOCATION then I can understand your interest in others profile. Maybe the FBI may be interested in your profile.

Some people give out way to much info about themselves anyway.

I haven't posted in this thread until now, because.....I really have nothing to say. It's a complete waste of time. But I did get an increase of 1 for my post count.:D:D
