I have checked everything!! Exhaust, U-joint, shift cable bellows are fine, water cooling hose from impeller, tightened down the housing ring and anodes at the bottom from inside, spent all morning working on the boat and finally took it down to the river and backed her in, water still pouring in from the outdrive into the boat, Any ideas?? "Could it be coming in from the two exhaust holes at the bottom of housing ring??" water always comes out from there but what prevents water from going into the boat from there??

I had water coming into my i/o at the base of the motor. I had a vibration but it seemed to be improving. That is until the bearings went and shaft beat the flywheel cover that the belloews hooks to to the point it leaked. Just something that happened to me.

The 2 holes just above the anodes on the transom feed into the y-pipe. If the bottom of your y-pipe or the attachment surface on the transom plate is corroded it will leak into the boat. About the only way to check it in many boats is to pull the engine and unbolt the y-pipe.

Couple of pics of an "almost" bad y-pipe. This one was changed just before it went bad:

This is the whole y-pipe. The 2 lower holes lead to the drains just above the anodes. the upper hole goes to the exhaust bellows.

You can see where this corner was almost corroded through:

These pits in the lower surface were almost all the way through:

OK guys Thanks!! I will be checking it tomarrow again and really look over with a fine tool comb, I even used a little mirror that is used for situations like this, comes in handy, thats how I was able to locate the bolts for the anodes to tighten them down today, I will look under the Y-pipe again tomarrow and see if its coming out or coming in down the Y-pipe and will not give up until I locate it, Thanks again will update thread tomarrow and hopefully find the cause:) Redone, it's coming in pretty good, almost as fast as not having the plug in, I ran the bilge pump while I was testing it in the river, Never took her off the trailer so don't worry, I'm not going to actually put her in or off the trailer itself until the problem is fixed but do hve to back her in again to locate it. Thanks again will let you all know what happens..................Pat

Re: Why else would water be pouring in??(UPDATED)

Found out what the problem is:( Its the Y-pipe, I checked all the bellows one more time even though I was sure that I didn't miss anything, finally troubleshooting Step 3(my own) Put the plug in and put a hose in the bilge, waited for the water level to raise and then there it is, water coming out the exhaust holes above the anodes, so it's the Y-pipe. I kind of suspected thats where the water was coming in but wanted to troubleshoot everything else first(Wishful thinking). So I guess it won't be able to be fixed with out having to pull the engine, right?? Well at least I know what the problem is. once the water level went below the Y-pipe it stopped and then pulled the plug to drain the rest. Letting you all know what I found today. Thanks........ Ya Dude, We know what that means:( ,I am hoping that means that when next season gets here she'll be good to go and since that means I am going to have to pull the engine and outdrive might as well check everything out as well and put it all back in fixed with new gaskets etc.. I am probably going to do it myself instead of a shop, we'll see. I have the complete mercruiser engine manual #18 and outdrive manual #6, will give me a chance to really sit down and study them while doing the work on her too, I already looked at the manual in the "Exhaust" section to get an idea of whats involved, If I try to fix it now I would probably be in too much of a hurry to try to get it done before the end of the season, so this way I could take my time over winter and do it right and check everything else while I am at it, new wire ends etc.. just everything!! One good thing is by the time I get done she'll be good to go, all the things that has been going wrong are common things that can't be prevented. Solenoid, electric fuel pump, starter Etc...could happen on newer boats too.

dont change the name man. I was just wondering what you were gonna try, didnt want to imply the season was over. Thats such a bummer. At least you are able to spend the time fixing it up right, doing seals and bellows, etc. Look at it this way, everything will be done and you have a point to go from, knowing what has been done and what has not. I feel for ya, I would help out if i was closer lol...
