First, let me begin by saying, I understand the new rules here. I am not trying to change them, or curtail them in any way. I am simply beginning a dialogue regarding the reason(s) for coming to DC.

In all honesty, I came to iboats for help on my boat and I thank all of you that helped or attempted to help, it is truly appreciated. I learned and continue to learn from all the brilliant people supplying free advice. It's amazing.

Also, what kept me here in DC was the amount that I learned regarding topics such as politics. Sure, I had a differing opinion regarding politics compared to many here. But, when I left a discussion or argument with someone here, I always walked away as a more aware, more informed person...always with no exceptions.

It did not matter that it rarely, if ever changed my opinion. What did matter was that I got the chance to hear intelligent points of view from people like QC, Pointer, Boom, as well as so many others that I always seemed to be sitting across the fence from. Points of view, keep in mind, that I would possibly never have considered without the opportunity given via iboats and DC. Good or bad, I never had to watch the news, I could get every political angle right here on this forum. I want and continue to strive to be an informed American. Iboats helped keep me informed, And yes, I know, so many of you did not like that......I understand.

The kinder, more gentle forum is ok. In all honesty though, I usually don't walk away from DC being a greater informed American citizen since the change. I can live with that, I simply miss it is all.

All the political points of view in America help to make the fabric of our society. I believe I may have underestimated the role DC played in my view of that fabric. Hearing only one side distorts that fabric. I don't want a distorted view. I really do miss much of, but not all, regarding the "old" iboats.

If, in the opinion of the mods, I have crossed the line, it was not my intent, and I apologize.

I have to agree with you, CJY. And I had to learn there were posts that I had to stay away from, because of my intense beliefs - and not wanting to alienate anyone or be derogitory to them. Some of those were religions in nature and some were political, some were even both. But I did learn alot, and got a different perspective on things, which did not change my view, but made me more understanding and less antagonistic towards the opposite view.

Being new to the site could you give me a breif on what used to be allowed and what is not now allowed so as to not cross the line. I have owned boats all my life and have learned more lurking here than the past 30 odd years of trial and screw up wrenching. I really enjoy this site and try to follow it as much as time allows. Thanks to all who share their knowlege so the rest of us can learn.

They are "pinned" at the very top of the DC topics. In short, nothing controversial.

Ya know guys, if you take about 10 minutes you could start your own polical message board on Yahoo. Just PM everyone the link.

These guys are running a business and dont want a bunch of grumpy old men sitting out front scaring the customers away.

Re: Why I miss the old Dockside Chat

It is a given that human memories tend to remember the "good old days" and forget the "bad old days".

I have moderated about 100,000 trolls and flame wars in DC, and before that in NTDWB. Most of them started out as civil exchanges of views but turned into nasty exchanges of personal insults. I think I recognise a troll and I think I recognise the seeds of a flame war.

It is a shame that gentlemen such as yourselves cannot hold a civil exchange of views without someone pulling a knife or throwing a bottle, but that is what has proved to be the way it is on the internet, but will not again be at iboats.

There have been several threads in the past week that are thinly disguised or undisguised ridicule of the new iboats policies. That is a very bad idea and I urge you and others to avoid such offensive practice. Not all we Mods have thick skin about our baby and you risk severe retaliation.

This thread, though innocently started, has the potential to offend and to turn nasty. Should it go in that direction it will be zapped.

Oh hell yea I miss the old DC, but I sure the heck wouldn't want to have to moderate it! Gawd, having to read all that BS and take out the bad and leave the ok, yuk, what a horrible job. I wouldn't do it if someone paid me.

I put myself on the "dark" side for a few minutes, and in 10 minutes I hated having to read through all the replies for all the posts. That sucks. It's hard to see the light from the other side of the tunnel until you put yourself there.

Although I pissed off some mods, (at least 3) on a few occasions and think that things that happened 6 months ago shouldn't be held against me, I certainly respect that they have to read our BS. I wouldn't even want to read my BS!

JB, all I can say is that I did not intend this to be "thinly disguised" or any other type of ridicule meant for iboats. I usually do not mince words, I would not have started now.

If severe retaliation means banned, so be it. I accepted the new policy and I have not posted anything since then in an effort to offend or curtail the new policy.

In all honesty, I don't see where this thread has gone bad, at least yet. A few missed my point and assumed I am trying to change things. Again, not my point. My point, there is much about the old that I do miss. There is also some that I do not miss. I went on to try to express why I miss the "old". Nothing more, nothing less.

What makes you think we fail to understand this? Those that were unable to deal with the new policy left. Those that accepted it stuck around. I simply stated my reasons for missing the old.

Re: Why I miss the old Dockside Chat

I'm not as old as some, but older than most. I've been here almost from the beginning. We did talk about many things. Some was really hot topics and those that abused the rules were managed.

I feel with the very large membership it got so big and too hard to handle. All I can say is that this should be a jerk in ones chain on how fragile your freedom actually is. There is hardly any county other than ours that will let anyone speak openly against their countries fabric. Try going one day using these rules on this site in your everyday routine. You'll be surprised on how hard it can be.

I'm just happy knowing many of you and your ideas regardless of the topics. Have a great day.....SS

Easy, CJY. My reference was to other threads, not this one. My caution was to not turn this one into a whining thread. It isn't, so far, and that is good. :)

I miss the humor. Not the C & P jokes kinda humor, but the style of wording and posting that makes ones sit back and smile, laugh, or simply mumble. I had some good laughs and some fun yesterday in the Zzzzzzzzzzz thread and still dunno why that one was locked. Who was fightin'? As far as I could tell, We wuz funnin'! Don't get me wrong, I can't imagine having to babysit some of the stuff that goes on.

It's not always what you say, it's how you say it. think back to the little old lady that would put you in your proper place, and never say a bad word. and you'd walk away with your tail between your legs.

"Funnin" is viewed sometimes as "making fun of", Jeff. That is usually offensive.

A reminder that comments, questions, suggestions or complaints about the management or moderation of this site are not to be discussed in public, but taken to iboats management.
