Why insure my cars...?

Since I own about 5 vehicles, I got to thinking that it makes a lot more sense to get an insurance package that simply insures anything that I drive. That would include rented, borrowed, owned, etc. This would make sure that all registered and licensed drivers would be insured at the time that they got their driving license and that they were completely covered while driving any car. That way, I wouldn't be paying for cars that I have in the barn (old corvette, etc.) Doesn't this make more sense than paying thousands per year when one can only drive one vehicle at a time? I have a bunch of beaters too, but I only insure the main ones I drive.

Don't know if it's just 'Oregon', but my insurance now wants at least 2 months in advance to add additional cars in.

NOT!

Insuring your license can get spendy. So I've heard anyways.

H.

Re: Why insure my cars...?

I have always argued that you should have two policies, one for damage against your vehicle, and this policy to be on the individual auto, and to be voluntary. The other to be required on every licensed driver, for pl, and pd to cover damage to property, and life ,liberty, and health to others. This would lower everyones personal insurance cost, and put the cost where it belongs, and that is the "DRIVER" doing the damage. The wife and I are retired, have two well kept vehicles (pick up and sedan) very seldom does a vehicle move without us both being in it, as we do not drive much, and when we do we usually are both in the vehicle, as we are a close couple (and live at the lake, and hate to leave it). We have to pay full on two policies on well maintained safe vehicles that are seldom driven (and only one at a time).
Then, up the road a piece is a house full of deadbeats, drunkards, and dopers, that have one old jolapy that is not safe to be on the highway, (with kiddy balloons for tires) that is constantly on the road, for no good reason, except some one in this den of thiefs is out of beer, cigarets, or a fix. They have one pl and pd policy, just to be legal, or no insurance if in a state where it is not required, or if they can get away with it.
So, driving is a privelage, and not a right, and so all drivers licenses should carry a pl, and pd policy written to cover any and all vehicles that the person whose name is on the license drives.
Then if a person owns a vehicle, and wants coverage for it, he can purchase an individual policy for that vehicle. This would be the "ONLY" way to have the auto insurance system fair for all. :D :D :D :D At the present time, it is only good for deadbeats and insurance companies.

Unfortunatly the insurance companies will not do any of the suggestions anyone has made here because that would cut into their profits.

Can't do that now, can we.

Automobile insurance is quite possibly the biggest rip-off in the U.S. today.

If you pay $1,000 per year for insurance and don't make a claim, that $1,000 paid should be carried over to the next year or until a claim is made.

When was the last time you needed to make a claim?

I haven't ever had an accident or needed to make a claim, yet I have to continue to pay!

So other than being able to register my vehicles, what do I get out of auto insurance?

After making a claim, then you should have to pay $1,000 to reestablish your coverage.

That would be fair, but auto insurance is not about being fair, it's all about profits for the insurance companies, who make extremly large contributions to elected officials every year to stay out of their business.

Lakeman, I agree with your post 100%, that would work.

Kenny

lots of complaining around here. no, you don't have to pay for insurance (or not all of it). insurance is a choice in most situations. it's all in how much risk you want to take. no one is pressuring you to carry full coverage on your cars- just pay liability. but when you crash your $35k car, don't whine about the repair bill. no one forces you to pay for life insurance either, but if you want to screw your family, go ahead and cancel. insurance seems to be reasonable to me, especially the piece of mind it provides.

mattttt25,

You feel that $1,800 per year for the minimum required liability coverage is cheap?

I don't think so!

To add just fire and theft, add on an additional $800, then an additional $1,200 if you need collision because you lease or have a loan!

That comes to a whopping $3,800 per year!

Can you say HIGHWAY ROBBERY!

Please don't make the mistake of thinking that something making sense matters to insurance companies.

The insurance companies have a monopoly on this and they know it.

The law says you got to have it and they, the insurance companies know this, so they charge whatever is in the neighborhood of the other guy so they all make money.

If you have too many claims, then that want to cancel you so as to get a higher(high risk) policy out of you.

Yea it stinks, but there is nothing to do but pay.

$1800 liability for one car? that is high. i pay $500/yr for my 2002 tacoma. maybe you need to switch companies. as for fire/theft and collision, again- your choice. no one forcing you to pay it. if you want to take the chance, go for it. and yes, new cars and leases require these. answer- don't buy a new car unless you have the cash, and don't lease.

yeah, it sucks to pay $1000/yr for my truck. but if i total it today, i get $23k to buy a new one. that helps me sleep better at night.

insurance is gambling- or minimizing your risk while you gamble- any way you want to look at it. you can trim off lots of money by modifying you policies. but then you take that chance...

ps. if any of you are military or prior military, check out usaa. no one in the world can touch their rates or service.

Auto insurance is not much different than most other insurances, where you are mostly paying for "everybody else", both insured and uninsured, more so than just for yourself.

Since trucks and SUVs are not required to have 5 MPH bumpers, it not uncommon to rack up a $3000 bill for a "fender bender". Somebody's gotta pay and it is usually us :( .

At least Colorado is ditching "no fault" insurance next month. Premiums are supposed to drop around %25. We'll see.

Re: Why insure my cars...?

I only pay $600/yr for my 2001 Ranger 4x4 full coverage.

Even though I own the truck, I still keep full coverage.

I believe it's a huge rip-off too. They should give you some kind of break for accident free etc...

The main thing that pisses me off on insurance is that some base it on a geographical area and gender.

Why won't they pull their heads out of their back-side and charge according to the drivers ability?
Women typically get cheaper rates than men...WHY?

Ask any truck driver...How many of those pop cans flying by you at top speed are piloted by a young female doing her hair, talking on the cell-phone, and listening to Britney Spears?

Just after they made it mandatory that all drivers carry insurance, I just graduated from high school. Of course I couldn't afford insurance. I went for almost 8 years with NO insurance, no tickets, and NO accidents.

Now when time came I could afford the coverage, what did they tell me?
"Since you have gone so long without insurance, we have to put you at high risk"
Excuse me? I have a spotless record! I've proved I'm probably a better driver than most of your insured drivers!
But no....I had to 'pay' into the system I guess.

To this day (God forbid) I still have a spotless record. The whole thing is a scam. Bottom line.

And since we're on the subject, can anyone recommend a good on-line insurance company? Has anyone had any pros/cons?
I have my home and auto all in the same local place, but about every 6 months, they jack my car insurance up for no reason. They say it's just a 'normal rate increase across the board'...What part of B.S. don't you understand?

Now you got my fuming!

H.

Most insurance and medical costs would go down with tort reform.
With most politicians being lawyers, this won't happen.

Re: Why insure my cars...?

Well I pay about $850 per year for 4 vehicles and 4 full time drivers, yes its just liability. But still one driver (girl) just turned 18 and one just turned 17 (boy) 3 of my vehicles are trucks and my wife’s is 4x4. All are 10+ years old, I have looked at newer stuff it just has no class! Or doesn’t drive like a quality vehicle. There is an insurance for “classic cars” that you can get for under $100 per year, main restrictions = you can’t drive it to work and it must be garage kept. Other than that you can go anywhere you want unlimited miles etc. Do we need reform in the auto insurance? YES. Will it happen? Not likely. After all everything is about the money, you must spend every penny you get for the economy to work! Cars 10 years old, the government wants off the road. Why? So you have to buy a new one! I read Hot Rod magazine, they have had many articles on this over the years. My Dad ran an auto salvage for many years, and could have got “special funds” for destroying older cars instead of selling parts. He sold parts!

Re: Why insure my cars...?

There has probally never been anyone who griped more about paying insurance than me. I always thought that if you went the whole year with no claim then you ought to get a refund. I bought a six month policy on my rig and do I ever regret it. My home caught fire and my rig got hurt too. The policy was lapsed. $5,000 to repair. My home policy averaged $780.00 for 10 years. The amount of the total claim was over $236,000.00. That is the BEST investment I ever made. But on the automobile side, I don't guess that I'm smart enough to figure that one out. At the Papermill I work at we have jawed around with being "self Insured" but I don't think that we have the number of investors to hold the liability. Here in Alabama, all drivers are SUSPOSED to be insured. I don't know of anyone who has been jailed for driving while uninsured. What is the answer?? It may sound corny to some but for me, its a little piece of mind even though I hate to pay the premimum. If something ever did happen..at least then you have some coverage.

Re: Why insure my cars...?

High deductible is the answer for me. I carry $1000 deductible on all 4 vehicles. Liability only on the 11 year old Camaro that I drive. I figure I can pay for the small stuff. Still, I pay $320 a month. One thing that gripes me is that when they passed the mandatory seat belt law here in Alabama about a year ago, my rate didn't change. I mean if everyone wears a seat belt that means more lives saved, fewer serious injuries and less pay out by insurance companys. Did they reduce our rates? NOT!
