Why is my PowerPro getting brittle?

I spooled up with some fresh PowerPro a few months ago. I fish from my boat, mostly over grass flats and soft sand (no rocks, very few oyster bars, no pier/jetty fishing), but my line is looking ragged and frayed. Sometimes, just tying a knot on it will cause it to break...easily. This is the first time I've tried braid and am disappointed so far, am ready to go back to mono.
Yes, I do wash down the reels after a day on the water to wash the salt off them.

Just a thought but does your rod have ceramic guides on it if so you might have a cracked guide and it's fraying your line.Look at your guides very closely.take a razor blade and gently rub it around the bottom area of your guides and see if you feel a crack.Maybe you need to replace a guide.I fish with power pro and I love it(off shore bottom fishing)I use alot of live bait and you can feel your bait swimming even in 100 feet of water.Good luck.

K, did you get it figured out? Just curious as we fish a lot of PP and haven't had any issues. Are you using the green, red or yellow?

I use the real light PP and sprayed it with silicon after every use. Makes a big difference, expecially if casting with it.

Interesting........I use the Kevin VanDam line & lure spray on my casting reels. I can certainly see where silicone would work but I'd be afraid the reds wouldn't like it so much. On the other hand, they might love it. New secret weapon?????

A lot of people swear by WD40 as an attractant

Haven't noticed any difference with crappie and bream. A lot of people use Reel Magic too but I haven't tried it.

Re: Why is my PowerPro getting brittle?

I have tried almost all of the Spectra braids and the only one I will never use again is Spider wire. The line is a loose braid and seperates and also very hard to hold a knot.

All the other Spectra Braids I have use are great and I will never go back to MONO. With the Spectra line you can use half as much weight and feel every bite even at 500 feet. The Smaller diameter means you can use lighter more fun gear. Also with the smaller diameter you can use heavier line and still be way smaller and less water drag than Mono.

Still my favorite line is courtland Spectron. I have had this line on my heavy deep water gear for over 13 years. At the start of the season I check each rod and cut off maybe 4 feet where the line has rubbed on the rock we fish for rock fish. On these rods use 80 ln line with a 60 pound leader. Also use a lot of 40 pound spectra on the lighter rods that are rated at 15 to 30.

Biggest problem I have seen with any except Spider wire is the color will fade to white over time but the line is in good shape.

Spectra lines have made ocean fishing a lot more fun because can use lighter gear all the way around with less weight and more fighting fun.
