Into the fray................

It was mentioned some time back somewhere on the web that the non synthetic oils might have some benefits at cushioning, especially with some of the older plain bearing motors. Whereas the synthetics will burn much cleaner and provide much better anti-wear characteristics.

Consequently it is my belief that there may indeed be some benefit in running the semi-synthetic.

And at that, I find the Pennzoil quite satisfactory.

But even at that, I can see a differences in it's smell (out of the bottle) and dye color or content since I started using it a couple of years ago.

I think when it comes to which oil is better will go down as one of those unanswered arguments like Chevy or Ford and Johnson or Mercury. If it has been working for you use it. As far as the generics like it was mentioned earlier about Wal-mart being Penzoil most generis are just name brands renamed. So most of them are pretty good oil.

Lubedude-

I agree with your assessment. I recently moved from Superior, Wisconsin (home of Amsoil)and up there the acceptance of synthetics is pretty high simply because so many people are familiar with the product. It is not viewed as "snake oil" because its use is so common. In that area and the Snowmobile racing industry, Amsoil is extremely well known and well respected.

It is worth noting that Klotz too is a true synthetic. It has traditionally been geared toward the racing industry and also has an outstanding reputation. For high RPM applications, it is hard to beat. Additionally, in DFI (low oil ratio) applications, Klotz and Amsoil are ideal choices.

The traditional knocks against both are based upon price #1 and secondly, people have always been skeptical about Amsoil's local guy Pyramid Scheme method of selling. With Amsoil becoming more common in commercial businesses this has certainly helped the perception that people have. But there has always been a taint because your local Amsoil guy was kinda viewed like the Amway distributor.

I am currently a user of Pennzoil 100% Synthetic in my Nissan TLDI, but intend to transition to Klotz when I use up my case of Pennzoil. You gotta love the smell of the Klotz. :)
