In my experance the good people on my staff do have REAL problems sometimes

And the marginal ones seem to have them all the time

I have developed making them quit skills which is much more fun then fireing them

Pony, This is a great lesson for you. Apparently you have reached a level of management which indicates you are the right kind of employee.

The lesson to remember is never forget how it hurts YOU to let someone else go. This proves you to be a real person with the right attitude toward life.

You recognize the pain it causes another and this is the heart that is required for a good manager. The old style hardazz pusher boss is history in my philosophy and i would never want a manager working for me to not have feeling for those working for them.

You did the right thing (best interest of company) and felt the right way (compassion for anothers feeling). Sounds like a good man and a good boss, congratulations sounds like your employer made a good decision with you.

pony, there have always been people like that and always will - it's just part of it.

You asked why would he be surprised - we can only guess, but here's a couple possibilities:
1 - he wasn't surprised, only acting like he was surprised.
2 - he was surprised because he just doesn't understand the job requirement of showing up for work on time and ready to work. He doesn't think it's important, and can't understand that everyone else's priorities aren't the same as his.

My company's work-time violation policy is one written warning followed by dismissal, but the written warning is optional.

It is called poor parenting. I am sure this kid grew up in a home where if he didnt "feel good" that day, he could stay home instead of going to school.

I hardly ever missed a day of school. Mama made me go even when I didnt want to.

My kids are the same.

Pony you did the right thing fire his butt.....but to expect anything out of the way from a seventeen yr old is crazy,i was working then and farming and the only thing on my mind was getting done so i could chase some girls and party.if the backgrounds there they'll grow up or not.but your job is to do whats right for the company and with this work pool today i think you'll be doing alot of firing in the future.
