Hi I have a problem with a 1983 35 horse Johnson motor. The problem is that this engine seems to be possessed. I fix one thing and something else breaks. I recently replaced the ignition switch and the engine started fine (at home),but when I put it in the water it failed me almost 5 miles away from the ramp. I know that the engine is fairly old 22 or so years and it is hard trying to find the complete wireing harness with ignition here where I live so the people at the boat place told me to wire the new ignition using the old one just cut the wires and leave enough wire to tell where the corosponding wire goes on the new ignition. I did this and it worked fine but now the engine wont start and all it does is the auto choke clicks when the ignition is turned. Iv'e searched for a wireing scematic for this engine to no avail and I'm getting to the piont of no return with this engine but other than these minor problems it preforms well. I'm a little concerned that I may have fried something in the circuit because I jumped the starter and the engine fired right up. Could I have damaged something and if so what could it possibly be. I've practically replaced every electrical part on the motor.Coils, powerpack, wires what's next.

Hi First off you live in the used part capital of the world Florida!!! More used parts come from there then any where so don't fret none. Most wire harness are pratilly the same for 20 to 60 hp of the same era 1980's There are very few wires in your system and wire diagrams a easyly obtained from repair manuals. Which I might add you should be purchassing as we speak. That is if your going to be working on your motor. Pretty much the color wires from any Johnson Evinrude all go to the same thing for almost ever. In your case thats true! Check ebay for a clymer book for about 20.00 bucks for all motors from 2-40 hp from 1973-1990 If you can't find one there go to Greg cooks web page or the local libary. These books will have all the info you need. Now check that solenoid nots fryed and if it is go by one for about 20.00 bucks or again ebay for about 8.00 dollars.

Thanks. I was basically thinking the same thing about the soliniod, but could there possibly be something else. I would hate to fix this issue only to have something else pop up while I'm on the water 4-5 miles from the boat ramp and my truck and trailer.

No Not at this moment. But just carry some supplies with you like a nice heavy gage wire to jump that motor if it fails. I once had to use a umbrella rigs wire to do the same thing. Boy did it get hot.

To test to see if the solenoid is working correctly - Connect a momentary push-button switch(like a horn switch) between the large post on the battery side of the solenoid and the small post on the ignition switch side. If starter motor works when pushing switch, solenoid is good.

The choke shouldn't click in simply when you turn the key on. If it does, you have the choke lead connected to the"A" terminal instead of to the "C" terminal where it belongs. The choke should only engage when the key is in the on position and the key is pushed in.

Check the starter solenoid by using a small jumper between the battery cable terminal of the solenoid and the 3/8" nut on the solenoid that engages the solenoid. That should energize the solenoid and the electric starter.

However.... the other 3/8" nut on the solenoid leads to ground. If it goes to a safety switch and then to ground, that switch may be faulty so check that also.

Notice the color of the wire on the solenoid 3/8" nut.... the one that engages it. That same color wire should be connected to the "S" terminal at the ignition switch.

Re: Why me.!!!!!!!!

Hi could the switch have been faulty and can it be ruined by this. I am in the process of locating a manual for this engine because there are two more wires in the wireing harness that were'nt hooked to anything. I'm getting frustrated so i'll leave this alone for today. I'll look for a manual tomorrow.

What are the color of the wires that are not connected.

What color wires are connected to what lettered terminal of the ignition switch.

Unlikely the switch is ruined.
