Aren't they alreay into 30 parts, each part run by it's own extreme faction?

Maybe giving them separate names would legitimize their separation.

Re: Why not split Iraq into three parts?

Was just talking about this with a good friend tonight.
Will each of the different groups accept the rule of the other? Some food for thought, with regards to the mentality of the region; the issues between Palestine an Israel, never mind the terrorist action from both sides. I am speaking merely of the land and political structure. Unfortunatley it hasn't yet worked with our influence, not that it can't or wont. In this I don't offer any answers just putting out what I see. Hopefully Pres. Bush and his advisors, as well as their succesors, see something that I can't, and will make this whole mess work out. The actual political process seems to be progressing while the military aspect seems to struggle, a whole new, yet mildly related beast(which has been beaten to death here). The only hope is that the region will accept the process by which their government was brought on and reach an accord where their own people take ownership and pride within the governing of the nation. That is, it, the acceptance of this form of governance, takes root and mobilizes the people to take back their nation from those that have held it captive for longer that I can/care to remember. To me that is the idea at it's most basic level.

However, splitting the nation, ala the Czech Republic and Slovokia may be the easiest answer. The problem is where do you split the country, when dealing with land that has great religous ties in highly a religous area.

Hey Ken
I think your idea makes since. But thats from a western "free thinking/living" nation. Thats not the middle east.
I think DaleT nailed it.
Take last Friday. All of the news TV/Papers were claiming Civil WAR in Iraq!
Monday NOTHING!
Because over the weekend the Army and Police (Iraq) supported "their goverment" the new one and that was a great stand for them.

Well I only replied because this was your post.
Link

It seems like a good idea, KIZ, but I think each would want an equal share of the oil, which is not equally distributed.

We'll end up with three separate rogue terrorist nations.

Re: Why not split Iraq into three parts?

Unfortunately, history doesn't tend to recognize fixed and allocated borders, and they tend to be somewhat flexible, depending on the size of the respective armys involved.

It's the old Russian negotiating theory:

"What's mine is mine;
What's yours is negotiable"

Whether or not Iraq is in a civil war now is problematic--I suspect it depends on how exactly you define "civil war"

What they really need over there is a Ghandi, or Mendala, or some sort of charismatic leader to bring the various factions together. Unfortunately they need to be born--They can't be made.

JB is on target......Who gets worthless desert & who gets the oil? The traditional Kurdish lands have oil......Not sure who is more populated in the "fertile crescent", but there are more Shiites than Sunnis overall....This would be a tough pie to slice, where everyone felt satisfied....
The Kurds should get a nation of their own....
Turkey wont like that.....JK

Well, the perfect scenario would be to unites them instead of dividing them. This is the land of infinite violent and bloodshed from the very beginning. These people thinks strapping a bomb on themselve and blow up is an honorable way to die. A person live mean basically nothing. They will kill each other for anything. This stuff is so deep rooted, it's in their culture, their belief pass on from one generation to the next, pretty fugging ignorance if you ask me. What they could use is someone like the first emperor of China who conquered and united all the different part of presently China into one country.

Perhaps we could base it on the good job we did creating Israel. Or perhaps pull out and let Iran come in and defend the Shia's.

Some places need a dictator we just need to find one who we like. You know the type just like Saddam a few years ago.

Here's how I'd like to split up Iraq:

The crater part, the vaporized part, and the part that will shut the hell up and stop being savages.

A nation based on the federal idea of semi independent states is the defacto reality right now.
Any attempt to make an independent Kurdistan will meet with huge opposition from Turkey,Iran and Syria. All of these have a restless Kurdish minority. One independent Kurdish nation in the middle east will cause civil war in these three countries and some serious slaughter of kurds.
The patriotic feelings of these mostly tribal groups are to their village and their religious leaders. The predominantly non bedouin Shias would try to hook up with their Iranian brethren. The only ones interested in an Iraq would be the bedouin suni tribal group.

Re: Why not split Iraq into three parts?

We really screwed up when we told Turkey (strong ally) that we would not divide Iraq. Still seems like the only reasonable way out. I'm sure Turkey would not have supported us if we hadn't made the promise not to subdivide Iraq when that whole campaign started. Now what?

Could things be any worse over there if we left?
Are we making our future any more secure?
The sacrifices our military is making are too much!
